Global Mental Health Day 2022

“Mental health is not a destination, it's a process. It's about how you drive, not where you’re going. " - Noam Shpancer

Each year on October 10th, the world celebrates Mental Health Day to bring attention to the stigma and prejudice that surround mental health issues and to motivate people to take meaningful action to fight this. This day also serves as a key date in the calendar for promoting workplace and personal mental well-being and provides a chance for people across the world to come together to think about what mental health means to them.

Every year, the World Federation for Mental Health introduces a new theme for celebrating this day, and this year’s theme is "Make mental health and well-being for all a global priority." To learn more about this day, keep reading the article further.

History of Global Mental Health Day

Global Mental Health Statistics

At present, the number of people understanding and prioritizing mental health keeps on increasing every day. Though it’s a good news, we can not stand at rest until we make sure that each and every person around us is mentally happy and does not have to suffer from any mental health illness alone.

  • Depression is believed to be the most common mental health disorder, affecting around a million people every year across the globe.
  • Recent studies have proved that there are many countries where the prevalence of depression is still quite high, which means that a large percentage of their population is suffering from mental health disorders.
  • As per the data of 2019, Ukraine is estimated to be the country having the highest share of population suffering from depressive disorder.

For further clarification, refer to the graphical representation given below.

  • As can be seen in the preceding chart, there are still many countries where mental health status of the population is not good.
  • In light of this issue, the goal of this year's Global Mental Health Day theme is to raise maximum awareness about the significance of mental health on a global scale.

Mental Health at Workplace

According to mental health experts, working conditions and the workplace environment are believed to have a huge impact on a person’s mental health and, equally, someone's mental health can significantly affect their ability to perform well in their job. That is why it has become extremely important to promote and ensure stress free working conditions at every workplace.

  • As per reports, it’s estimated that 1 in every 3 people views their job as having a negative impact on their mental health and general wellbeing.
  • A recent research conducted by the World Health Organization, stress and anxiety disorders, like depression, have been calculated to cost more than a trillion dollars in lost productivity globally.
  • This highlights the fact that paying attention to the mental health of employees is not only good for their individual wellbeing, but it also has a direct impact on the business.
  • Another research proved that female employees working in full-time jobs are nearly twice as likely to have a common mental health problem in comparison to full-time employed males.

Taking the reference of our country India, let’s study the data of men and women suffering from depression in the year 2019.
