The Goal Question Context- Welcome 2022

The Goal Question Context- Welcome 2022

According to the study of new year resolution done by Martin Oscarsson from the Department of Psychology Stockholm University, Stockholm, Sweden, approach-oriented goals are more successful than avoidance-oriented goals.

They did a large scale experiment on new years resolutions and most of the studies previously focused on the length and frequency of the new year's resolutions and their reasons for failure but not on the quality of resolutions/goals.

To achieve any goal the quality of the goal is also a key factor in your ability to accomplish it. The approach Goal - Question - Context (GQC) is one such approach that helps you to refine your goal, it also facilitates you to create an empowering context. The name GQC is inspired by the works of Victor Basil- Goal Question Metrics (GQM).

The Goal Question Context is an iterative approach for setting your goal. This also helps you to eliminate setting goals that are not really important for you.

Example:

Initial Goals -> I want to lose weight.

Why do you want to lose weight?

I want to look good.

Why do you want to look good?

Hmm.. I want to look good but more importantly,I want to be fit and healthy.

What happens you are fit and healthy?

I feel energetic, good and confident.

Can you restate the goal?

The refined goal with an empowering context :

I want to be energetic and confident by keeping my body fit and healthy. That will make me feel good.

In reality for some of your goals, a linear approach may not work but the important factor to consider is, you should iterate and find an empowering context that will motivate you to take action.

You can use mind mapping techniques or take help from a coach to refine your goals. The gaols which you set along with an empowering context will help you work towards it.
