Google Makes Changes. Sites Drop.
WEBSITE RANKING DROP RECENTLY? BLAME GOOGLE! In brief:
WHAT HAPPENED? Google made changes in the algorithm that ranks local search results in the week ending November 11th. It has had a major impact in local search rankings for many sites.
HOW WILL I KNOW IF MY SITE WAS AFFECTED? Look at your site’s ranking under the map at the top of any Search Engine Results Page (SERP). Your site may have been there for certain searches where your location was nearby to the person searching, and now it may not be listed. This is considered a “proximity” search. It is valuable for movers.
WHAT CHANGE DID GOOGLE MAKE? They changed the amount of miles that your site could be shown in the three listings under the map. Nobody knows for sure outside of Google, but from what various metrics show, the distance dropped from about a 10 mile radius of your warehouse to about a 4.5 mile radius of your customer.
WHY AM I JUST FINDING OUT? This was a major change to local search. In fact, the biggest since 2016, but Google did not consider it a “core ranking change”, so did not pre-announce it.
WHAT CAN YOU DO? Consult with your SEO Team and determine everywhere your site was affected. Put a plan together. Google made some minor tweaks while this change was being made a few weeks ago, but we expect no further changes. However, if you do see another movers now in the “Map 3 Pak” that is not within that 4.5 mile radius be sure to let Google know by completing their Redressal Complaint Form.
Onward and upward!
