Granite ERG Enhancing Safety with Initiative for Women’s PPE

At Granite we are committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all employees. Over the past year one of the company’s Employee Resource Groups, Granite Resources and Opportunities for Women (GROW) has been focused on personal protective equipment (PPE) specifically designed for women. GROW is focusing on the unique safety needs of Granite’s female workforce and ensuring that everyone has access to effective and properly fitting protective gear.

Why PPE is a Concern:

Traditional PPE is often designed with a one-size-fits-all approach, which can lead to poorly fitting equipment on women. Ill-fitting PPE can compromise safety, reduce comfort, and hinder performance. By providing PPE tailored for women’s bodies, Granite aims to enhance safety, comfort, and productivity on the job.

GROW’s Commitment:

GROW has partnered with Granite’s Safety and Supply teams to source high-quality, ergonomically designed gloves and vests that meet the specific needs of women employees.

GROW also has an ongoing partnership with Xena Workwear, which specializes in women’s footwear that is designed to fit better and provide superior protection. This partnership means that women at Granite can get top-flight footwear at reasonable prices.

Continuous Improvement:

GROW believes in continuous improvement and values employee feedback. To ensure that the women’s PPE initiative is successful, GROW is constantly soliciting employee input to help refine the initiative and ensure that Granite is effectively meeting the needs of all employees.

Feedback from the Field:

Victoria Ramirez is a flagger on the Colorado River Phase I Project in Wharton, Texas.  Her position with Granite is her first time working in construction.  In her role she is cutting trees, fixing fences, surveying, flagging, and anything else that is needed.  Victoria was excited when she received a safety vest made for women – it fits perfectly. Having safety gear that fits properly gives her confidence and a sense of security knowing she will be seen and doesn’t have to worry about the vest being too large and getting caught on something.
