The Great Resignation Is So 2021. Get Ready For The Great Restructuring Of 2022!
If you’re over 40, or are a manager or an executive, you need to hear this.
I want to talk about the fact that the Great Resignation is so 2021. As leaders, we now need to be talking about the Great Restructuring of 2022.
Companies Need To Adapt To A New Reality
If you've been in business for a while like myself, you know what’s about to happen: companies are going to go through a massive restructuring. They are going to look at the Great Resignation and the amount of churn and realize they need to make adjustments.
Whenever you have this much churn, you lose key people. You can't meet certain business needs. The company has to restructure. They have to cut back. It's going to change departments. It's going to change business strategies.
The Great Restructuring of 2022 is going to be much bigger than anything we've seen before. And that's because, for the last couple of years, we've been in sort of a holding pattern.
Think of it this way: the Great Restructuring is like somebody who's let their hair grow out for a long time, and then they walk in one day and they cut it all off. It's pretty dramatic.
And that is what a lot of companies are going to have to do in 2022.
Companies are going to have to adapt to a new reality, and the challenges of getting the right workforce and figuring out how they will make their business profitable. How will they compete going forward with all the massive change that's going on?
Outsourcing Jobs Will Be The New Normal
A lot of this will result in outsourcing. Companies will outsource nonessential positions and departments to stay in business.
For managers, there are two concerns here. The first is that you could lose your job very unexpectedly. You could quickly become irrelevant if your company decides that you're part of the business that is not absolutely vital and core. The second concern is that you will have a very hard time finding a new job.
When we talk about the Great Resignation, we hear that there are more jobs available than people who can fill those positions. But, that's only true for entry-level and lower-level positions.

The majority of jobs available right now are not at the management or executive level.
In my experience working with executives, it will probably take you 12 to 18 months to find a new job. But, you can shorten your job search significantly if you have something called executive presence.
What Leaders Need To Do To Prepare For The Great Restructuring
You are a business-of-one. You are a brand. You are a service provider. And if you want to stay relevant and at the top of your game, then you absolutely need to have an online presence where people understand your value proposition. Every business has a value proposition, so you need one, too.
As an executive, what's your value proposition?
I’m not talking about you looking like a narcissist online. I’m talking about a very strategic and calculated plan of how you show up on sites like LinkedIn because, right now, I can tell you that most of you are pretty old school, and if recruiters and hiring managers go to your profile and it looks outdated, you're going to deal with age discrimination.
So, my advice to you is that, with the Great Restructuring on the horizon, pay attention to your executive presence. Pay attention to your brand and be really honest with yourself. What have you done to make sure you’re relevant in the event that you are part of a restructuring?
