Grit, perseverance & mental toughness

Greetings friends! Over the last month we've started to host a 'Mindset Meeting' here at CHG to share ideas on personal development and mindset mastery. Yesterday's meeting was our 5th one and we were lucky to have Ultra-Marathon runner Mark Robbins who has also been with our company for over a decade. He shared some of his insights on how to have Grit and Perseverance.

Mark recently ran an Ultra-Marathon in under 30 hours and the race had an elevation gain of 18,000ft and stormy/rainy conditions through the night. Mark said this was easily his best race ever and never once felt like quitting. He was completely 'in the zone'. Below are the notes from the meeting and breakdown how Mark comes up with a game plan to conquer an Ultra-marathon race. The framework he uses to conquer his goals and stay mentally tough during trying times can be used in so many situations. Some of the notes below may be in the context of our work here at CHG but apply in anything you want to achieve.

According to Mark: Grit is passion and perseverance for long-term and meaningful goals. It is the ability to persist in something you feel passionate about and persevere when you face obstacles. This kind of passion is not about intense emotions or infatuation. Grit is sticking with your future! Grit is a success metric. Studies have shown that the grittier the person, the more successful they are. Grit often outweighs talent.

  • What is important to me?
  • Why is it important?
  • What will my life look like when I achieve it?

Set a goal and know the why!

  • Example: “I want to make $100K"
  • Do you know why?
  • Is that really how much you need?
  • Does your why wake you up in the AM?
  • Is your goal researched? AKA - Do you know how to get there?
  • Is it SMART? (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, Timely)
  • It's okay to be optimistic. Just don't be stupid.

Make it incremental.

  • Reverse engineer your goal so that you know where to start today.
  • For example. I want to lose 50 lbs. by January 2020.
  • How many lbs. per week is that?
  • How many calories per day?

Commit to the work!!

  • Are you willing to put in the effort that is required to be that person?

There is a solution to every problem!

  • There is opposition in all things
  • How do we build on the good that is going on?
  • Slips happen, it is okay!
  • Be gentle!
  • Learn! (I missed my calls? What happened? What needs to happen going forward? What does good look like to get back on track?)
  • Get back on track!
  • Gratitude breaks the failure cycle

Stress leads to Doubt which leads to Fear which leads to Panic which leads to Despair which leads to Failure.

  • When things get tough, focus on: What is one thing that you are grateful for?
  • Remember why you started when it gets hard! Weigh how much you want to succeed at your goal vs. how much you want to quit (and the consequences that come with it). On one of Mark's Ultra Marathon runs, his skin was literally peeling off his ankles due to the shoes he was wearing. Mark was able to focus on how much he wanted to finish and how much stronger that desire was compared with the desire to quit.

I'll be back next week with a new post on eliminating limiting beliefs.
