Happy Halloween!
Halloween is one of the most celebrated holidays, second only to Christmas. It’s a day full of imagination and fun, when both kids and adults can transform into characters they love. I have so many fond memories of my own childhood—getting dressed up, collecting candy, and reliving those memories when my son, John Robert (JR), was old enough to join in the excitement.
One Halloween that holds a special place in my heart was October 31, 2010, just days before JR’s first open-heart surgery. He was only 3 years old and, even with everything going on, he was completely absorbed in the magic of Halloween. During the day, we went to a Halloween party at his preschool, and by night, we were at a neighborhood gathering. JR got to be both Woody and Buzz Lightyear from Toy Story, which was such a joy to see. Our neighbors were so thoughtful and kind, making it a truly memorable day filled with love and support. Do you have a favorite Halloween memory or character? Please share!
Sadly, at 17, JR no longer goes trick-or-treating, but those early Halloweens remain some of my favorite memories. There’s something magical about seeing kids embrace the fun and excitement of pretending to be anyone or anything they want to be. It’s such a special time of year.
