Happy Thanksgiving – A Message to Elevate Your Holidays and Beyond

Happy Thanksgiving!

As we gather to celebrate gratitude, it’s a time to reflect on life’s blessings—and sometimes, navigate the challenges of family dynamics. Let’s face it: Thanksgiving often brings us face-to-face with loved ones we cherish...and those we prefer to keep at arm’s length.

As someone with nine biological siblings, I’ve mastered what I like to call the cheat code to holiday harmony. I’ve mapped out exactly who I can spend 5 minutes with, 3 hours, a full day, or even two days without losing my peace of mind. This simple system has allowed me to truly enjoy the season, surrounded by family and friends, without unnecessary conflict.

When working with families and businesses, I use Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) techniques to understand how people operate. Did you know we all experience the world through three primary filters?

Visual (seeing)

Auditory (hearing)

Kinesthetic (feeling)

Once you understand these components, you can connect deeply with anyone—family, friends, or employees—and motivate them in ways they naturally respond to.

Here’s how to identify and engage with each type:

1. Visual People

They’re big-picture thinkers who “see” the outcome first. You’ll notice they use words like see, picture, imagine, or look. They often speak quickly and get straight to the point. To connect with them, show them the vision: use images, videos, or colorful diagrams. Speak with clarity and speed to match their style.

2. Auditory

PeopleThese are the listeners, speaking at a steady pace and choosing their words carefully. They’ll say things like hear, click, sounds, or ring a bell. To motivate them, speak their language: “Let’s sound this out,” or “Does this idea resonate with you?” Use summaries, lists, and direct quotes—they thrive on organized communication.

3. Kinesthetic

PeopleThese individuals are feelers, deeply connected to their emotions. They’ll often say things like feel, sense, touch, or understand. To connect with them, mirror their language: “Does this feel right to you?” or “Do you sense the value here?” Engage them with hands-on activities, demonstrations, and real-life applications.

The Ultimate Goal: Become a VAK Communicator

The secret to powerful connections is adaptability. When you can shift seamlessly between these styles, you’ll build instant rapport with anyone you meet. Start today: observe your team, family, or friends and notice their dominant style. Then, adjust your approach to match theirs.

Now it’s time to put this into practice.

Let’s make this holiday season—and every interaction—a step toward deeper connections and greater success.

To your growth and harmony,

Dr. John Oda
