Harassment and violence against girls.

Harassment and violence against girls.

Until when?

In 2016, an article in Exame magazine said that “Brazil is the worst country in South America to be a girl”. According to the study Every Last Girl, of the international NGO Save The Children, Brazil occupied the 102nd position of the 144 countries surveyed, being behind all the neighbors of the continent.

The report indicated actions to reduce the central problems: marriage in childhood and adolescence, early pregnancy, maternal mortality rate, low female representation in politics and access to basic education.

As if that were not enough, the Brazilian Yearbook of Public Safety 2019, indicates that of all the rapes committed against women between 2017 and 2018, about 53.8% had victims as young as 13 years old. Every hour, four girls are raped.

With the pandemic and social isolation, rates of domestic violence against girls and women have grown by more than 50% across the country.

In early October, Plan International released data from the Freedom online survey? - How girls and young women deal with harassment on social networks, carried out with 14,000 girls, aged 15 to 25, in 22 countries, including Brazil, with the participation of 500 girls.

Part of the global Girls for Equality campaign, the study highlights that 77% of our girls have already suffered from online harassment, which starts early, between the ages of 12 and 16, although some have been harassed when they were 8 years old.

Facebook (62%), Instagram (44%) and WhatsApp (40%) are the networks where our Brazilian girls are the target of explicit messages, pornographic photos and online harassment, using abusive and insulting language (58%), followed by attacks on appearance, including body shame (54%) and purposeful embarrassment (52%), racist (41%) and homophobic (40%) comments.

Strange people (47%), anonymous (38%) and outside their friendship circle (38%) make up the profile of harassers who benefit from the inoperability of the networks' reporting tools.

How long will you also remain inoperable, letting your daughter and the girls in your life be harassed and raped?

We should educate males from young boys how to politely interact with young women and vice versa.

While culture has changed for the better many legacy attitudes prevail through both ignorance and inheritance; we have a long road ahead to liberate our peoples from this inhouse oppression by emancipating education. If a perpetrator, or victim, do not recognise wrong they have no barrier.
