The headache of CHEAP Clients; Setting VALUE not Price!
Have you ever had a call from someone for your services and even before they experience the power of your coaching and know what they are investing into, they ask you 'How much is it?' I don't know about you but for me at that point i have to really control my eyes to stop them from rolling because am wondering, how much is what? You don't know what I offer, maybe you have experienced coaching before but you haven't experienced the power of my coaching.
Cheap clients by definition are clients who make buying decision based on affordability not based on value. As a matter of fact some cheap clients are so cheap they negotiate with you before they even meet you and understand what is it you are offering.
They are not interested in the value you provide and may not benefit from your service no-matter how good you are. First of all i think cheap Clients are not worth your time even if you are desperate for the cheap clients money. Cheap clients are expensive! But if you insist on wanting to see them please LEAD the conversation don't allow them to lead you because they may 'cheapen' your VALUE.
I would rather give a value client all my time for free because i know they are serious about changing their lives and as such they are ready to take the coaching directives that come out of our conversations.
Value Clients already know that their dreams are priceless and are looking for someone who is a fit to what they want to create. They make the decision on whether the coach is a fit for them or not. They believe that coaching is magical and that the magic happens within them. Right from the time they decide that their dream is a MUST, not just a should. The cheap client treats you like a magician and want to know how much you are offering your magic so they can compare you with the next magician. I say 'God forbid!' ( feel the Nigerian accent in it and you get the point :)
Now please understand me, cheap clients have nothing to do with rich or poor. In-fact many cheap clients have alot of money and many value clients don't have the money yet but have the right mindset. It is a mindset thing.
To illustrate let me tell you a personal experience: 3 months ago I was looking for a specific kind of a car and i got 2 cars. The first car i liked was exactly the amount i had in my hands but the car I really really really wanted was twice as much. After test driving ( equivalent of the clarity session) it i was certain that is the car i wanted and had a rapport with the seller.
Because i really valued the feeling I had after test driving the car, I mean it has been my dream car for Gods sake, I only wanted someone who can help me make it a reality. I was clear on what I wanted and i got someone to help me get it ( the seller). The seller wanted my commitment and actually asked me 3 times if I am sure about getting into a 3 months deal to raise the balance. I immediately got into a deal with the owner who later became a good friend and i will be finalizing payment in a matter of weeks and get my ideal car.
The pain of my decision was that i was going to use Matatu for 3 months after a long time since i had already sold my car. The pleasure is that i get to hold my goal into my hands. What kind of a client do you think I was to this guy? obviously not the cheap one. I wanted value and when i got someone who could offer me the opportunity to claim my dream, i locked into the deal.
It is the same in coaching. If you are a coach make sure you offer value and invite people to experience the value you are offering so they can decide if you are a fit for their dreams. remember client dreams matter and the deal is not about how much your fee is but if you are the person who can create the space for your client to reclaim their lives.
If you are a cheap client, you dont have to live a cheap life. Begin to look at yourself as someone who is worthy of value and demand that value from life. life only offers what we demand of it, demand cheap and you will live and die a cheap life.
Never sell services like you are selling shoes. it is creepy and needy. let people experience what you are offering before you discuss your fees. otherwise if you get a call from a cheap client, run for your life and don't take their cheap money no matter how much it is.
Lastly, add value to yourself so you can attract value clients. Let me leave you with a quote from one of my mentors
I f you want a thing bad enough to go out and fight for it,to work day and night for it, to give up your time, your peace and sleep for it… if all that you dream and scheme is about it,…and life seems useless and worthless without it… if you gladly sweat for it and fret for it and plan for it and lose all your terror of the opposition for it…if you simply go after that thing that you want with all your capacity, strength and sagacity, faith hope and confidence and stern pertinacity…if neither cold, poverty, famine, nor gout, sickness nor pain, of body and brain, can keep you away from the thing that you want…if dogged and grim you beseech and beset it, with the help of God, YOU WILL GET IT! – Les Brown
