Hey Entrepreneurs, Help US Help YOU and we can improve your startup's business and change the state of North Carolina
After two days of success stories and data at the annual NC IDEA Ecosystem Summit in Charlotte, attendees are full of helpful information and new contacts to run their entrepreneur support organizations.
But first we need EVERYONE to understand that Entrepreneur Development is Economic Development. And Entrepreneur Support Organizations should have the same financial support as economic development (Recruiting) organizations.
While EVERYONE, including me, LOVES when North Carolina announces the most recent company that is bringing jobs to our state, that is a VERY expensive way to create jobs.
A more efficient way to create more jobs is to invest in programming for Entrepreneurs delivered by the right people in the right organizations. Government HATES to pick winners and losers in the startup space. So put the funds into the Entrepreneur Support Organizations.
Wilmington NC , where I have worked to startup, build and grow the formal entrepreneur ecosystem since 2013, was recently named the #7 city in the USA for job growth and salary growth. These jobs were created by entrepreneurs not by recruiting new companies to the coast.
In a recent study by the North Carolina office of the Secretary of State, if entrepreneurial education programming could improve the results of entrepreneurs or small business owners by just 5%, it could create 25,000 more new jobs in North Carolina and have a $2 BILLION impact on the state. (See the picture above.)
The Problem?
In the same research, they found Entrepreneurs were not aware of local Entrepreneur Support Organizations in their regions. 37% of entrepreneurs claimed lack of awareness of local Entrepreneur support organizations.
But the Problem - Someone was recently trying to recruit me to do some consulting in a region that needed a boost in the local Entrepreneur ecosystem. So before I agreed to do the consulting, I was following the information the existing organization was sending about an upcoming workshop event about attracting investor capital.
The workshop was cancelled due to lack of registrations.

This is a two sided problem.
With a very fragmented market for an audience, how do Entrepreneur Support Orgs market their educational offerings to entrepreneurs. What do the Entrepreneurs read? The business sections of local newspapers keep shrinking. Sure we can have information on our web sites, but how do we convince entrepreneurs our programming will have an impact on their business. WHO is teaching these workshops? If the Entrepreneurs don't know or don't yet respect the leaders of the workshops, it is a VERY tough sell.
To bring it back to where I work in Wilmington NC, it is VERY difficult to convince entrepreneurs with startups they are trying to scale, it is VERY difficult to convince them to leave the office where they are building their business and participate in regularly scheduled program of educational events like workshops.
What WORKS to help entrepreneurs and their startups STRIVE beyond 3-5 year mark?
The strongest and OLDEST startup ecosystem in North Carolina is the Triangle market of Raleigh / Durham / Chapel Hill.

This is a modern evolution of the old FasTrac program started by the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation .
These kinds of three month educational programs can reverse the data where now 70% of entrepreneur participants can thrive beyond 3-5 years.
We just need the financial support to put on these kinds of programs across the state and a little trust from the Entrepreneurs and the community to fill these workshops. And the sources of these funds need to go BEYOND the generous people behind NC IDEA.
