The Hidden Cost of Holding On to the Past: How One Blind Spot Could Be Sabotaging Your Business—And How to Find It

What if one blind spot is silently draining your revenue—without you even realizing it?

This million-dollar question radically transformed both my business and my life. It began with a simple, yet profound inquiry: "Tina, when did you decide it wasn't safe to show up?"

That question cracked open a part of my story that I had long buried beneath years of professional and personal development work. Despite over 5,000 hours of self-improvement courses and training, this was something I had never confronted before.

In 7th grade, I was bullied.

Every day.

Every recess.

After school.

In the hallways, the same group of six girls would find me. They didn’t stop at teasing—they went much further. They told me I was ugly, unwanted, and should disappear. Our school trips were unbearable.

They’d hurl insults that chipped away at my sense of self-worth, and eventually, I began to wish they were right—that I didn’t exist. Anything to escape the torment.

What did I do to cope? I disappeared. I hid.

I spent recesses in the bathroom, or I’d volunteer to help in the kindergarten room—anything to make myself invisible. In those moments, I learned to survive by shrinking away from sight, thinking this would protect me.

But here’s the thing: that survival mechanism didn’t stay behind when I left grade school. It followed me into adulthood, and it stealthily shaped how I showed up in my business.

For years, I kept a low profile. I didn’t put myself out there, and I didn’t take risks that could have propelled my business forward. I played small because, without realizing it, I had made a decision at 13 years old—a decision that would silently control the trajectory of my future.

That is, until I uncovered it.

Once I identified this blind spot, everything changed. I made a bold promise to myself: I wouldn’t let my 13-year-old self run my business anymore. It was time to step into the spotlight, no matter how uncomfortable it felt.

And when I did, the results were transformative.

I went from making little progress to generating $40K in just 8 weeks and $100K in 5 months. What was the difference? It wasn’t a new strategy or a marketing tactic. It was the courage to face my past, identify the hidden stories holding me back, and take decisive, uncomfortable action.

The truth is, your past stories may be silently influencing your business without you even knowing it. That fear of judgment, that desire to stay unseen—it may be costing you more than you can imagine.

But how do you discover these blind spots? Here are three ways to begin uncovering the hidden blocks that could be holding you back.

1. Notice Patterns in Your Triggers

One of the fastest ways to uncover a blind spot is by paying attention to your emotional triggers. Do you find yourself overreacting in certain situations, like receiving criticism or not getting immediate results in your business? These triggers are often tied to unresolved stories from your past. Ask yourself:

- When was the first time I felt like this?

- What situation does this remind me of from my childhood or past experiences?

Often, your reaction has little to do with the present and everything to do with the stories you’ve been carrying for years. Triggers are like neon signs pointing to blind spots, so don’t ignore them.

2. Ask for Outside Feedback

Blind spots, by nature, are things we can't see ourselves. Sometimes it takes an outside perspective to shine light on the areas where we're stuck. Ask trusted friends, mentors, or colleagues to give you honest feedback on how you show up in different situations.

- Are you avoiding leadership roles?

- Do you shy away from promoting yourself or your business?

- Do others notice that you tend to deflect or downplay your success?

Sometimes the things we believe are "just part of who we are" are actually self-limiting patterns we’ve adopted over time. Being open to feedback allows you to view yourself from a different angle and see what may be holding you back.

3. Examine Your Comfort Zone

Growth happens outside of comfort zones, but many of us unknowingly trap ourselves in routines that feel safe yet limiting. Ask yourself:

- What am I avoiding because it feels too uncomfortable?

- Where am I playing small in my business or life?

The decisions to avoid discomfort are often rooted in fear—fear of failure, rejection, or judgment. These fears are usually tied to old stories that no longer serve you. By deliberately stepping into discomfort and challenging your habits, you might uncover a blind spot that’s been hiding in plain sight.
