Honouring the artisans : A Tribute to the Backbone of Society
कर्मण्येवाधिकारस्ते मा फलेषु कदाचन। मा कर्मफलहेतुर्भूर्मा ते संगोऽस्त्वकर्मणि॥ - Shreemad Bhagavad Gita (Chapter 2, Verse 47) The Bhagavad Gita teaches us about the importance of performing our duties thoroughly, regardless of the outcomes. This shloka emphasizes that while we have control over our actions, we shouldn't be attached to the results. It encourages us to focus on doing our best without worrying about success or failure.
I started working as a diamond bruiter in Surat when I was only 13, to support my family. Coming from a humble farmer family, I enjoyed my job in the diamond industry which provided me with a good infrastructure and satisfaction. As time went on, work became more than just a job to me. It became a journey, showing me how special and important every task we do is.
In the diamond industry, the people who work with the diamond used to be called different names. Earlier they were called "Heera ghasu”, “Karigar” etc. After working as a diamond worker for 7 years, I became well aware of the importance of the skills held by diamond workers and always felt like these names are not doing the justice to the skills of diamond artisans. That’s when I learned from Pandurang Shashtri Athavle to see them as "Ratnakalakars," recognizing the sacred essence of their work and how important and skilled they are. Today they are also refered to as “Diamond crafters”, which is a perfect name for them. They don’t just make diamonds, they craft them with dedication, precision, passion and skill. This change wasn’t just about what we call them, it was about understanding how special their work is.

Today on #internationalLabourday, let’s give a thought on why our work matters. Following the teachings of Shreemad Bhagavad Gita, let's do our jobs with care, without worrying too much about what we get back. Let's enjoy our work, knowing that each task we finish is like a small prayer. Let's be grateful for the chance to work and show others how great people can be.
