How to Build Trust in a World of Contradictions

How to Build Trust in a World of Contradictions

Mastering the Paradox...

As leaders, we’re all acutely aware that trust is the lifeblood of effective leadership and transformational change - Ah, let's be honest it's pretty much the be all and end all right!? Yet, in today’s complex world, building and maintaining trust is a tougher challenge than ever. As leaders we're constantly caught in this kind of matrix paradox, it's like we are constantly living in two different realities - which makes it super hard for us to build trust..let me explain: We need to be both courageous and humble, we are require design structures and yet be always adaptable, we are to be seen as open yet expected to be decisive and take big decisions when needed. These contrasts aren’t just philosophical—they’re at the heart of the trust dilemma that today’s leaders face.

So here’s the paradox in action: To build trust, we often need to balance opposing qualities that can feel contradictory. Trust, however, is fragile - the moment it's lost - so much more is lost with it that can take forever to rebuild. If leaders operate at opposite ends of a spectrum from where their teams or stakeholders lean, distrust can quickly creep in. Add to that our human tendency toward negativity bias—an instinct to view the unknown with caution—and you start to see just how quickly trust can erode in the face of paradoxical leadership.

The Edelman Trust Barometer has shown that trust in institutions, leaders, and even colleagues is more polarised than ever. As leaders, we risk losing people’s trust if we don’t find ways to navigate these oppositions skillfully.

Techniques for Leading Through Paradox:

So, how can leaders harness these paradoxes rather than letting them derail trust? Here are a few powerful strategies I'll be exploring in the upcoming Digital Leadership 2.0 Masterclass Series:

  1. Courageously Humble: Practicing humility without undermining your authority. Think about how you express openness and vulnerability while remaining decisive and confident in your vision.
  2. Structured Yet Flexible: Creating a stable framework that accommodates change is vital in this climate. But what does that mean in terms of design so you can create adaptable, enabling structures that keep your team grounded without stifling innovation.
  3. Openness with Decisiveness: Building an inclusive culture while being prepared to make tough calls has potentially been a part of leadership for a long, long while, but today it's crucial - with anxiety rates increasing, younger generations bringing new expectations into the workplace and older generations wanting to stay and offer value. Having empathy without compromising on critical decisions is something we must all prioritise as leaders today.
  4. Trusting Yourself First: This is a biggie. Before you can build trust with others, it’s essential to cultivate it within yourself. The paradox? Self-trust grows from embracing your uncertainties and learning from your missteps. And this is a key part of masterclass three; Leading self in mind and practice.

These paradoxes (and there are a lot more believe me!) don’t just test our leadership skills; they define us as leaders. The Digital Leadership 2.0 Masterclass Series shares tools and insights so you can thrive in this contradictory landscape. As captured by some of my mentees who have been a large part of bringing Digital Leadership 2.0 to life, this is an an invitation to redefine how you lead in a world that demands agility, resilience, and trust, no matter the contradictions.
