How To Combat Imposter Syndrome & Increase Your Confidence
Wondering how to overcome imposter syndrome? You’ve come to the right place!
As a longtime Business Therapist and Mindset Coach, imposter syndrome is one of the key issues my clients (and even myself) struggle with from time to time. It’s a natural occurrence that happens to nearly everyone, whether you’re an entrepreneur, working a corporate job, in college, or even a stay-at-home mom. But just because it’s natural, that doesn’t mean it should overshadow your dreams and desires or deflate your confidence on a regular basis.
Imposter syndrome can be dealt with. Your self-confidence can get boosted back up. All you need is a little help from me; here is my step-by-step method:
1 - Become aware of what is triggering your imposter syndrome
First things first: you must get to the root of the problem. There’s no point in combating imposter syndrome if you can’t even face it! Figure out what the common trigger(s) is for your imposter syndrome - is it competitors? Things that a toxic family member or friend says? Or has your self-esteem and self-confidence always been on the poor side due to childhood trauma? Whatever it is, you need to identify it because once you do, you can have power over it and begin to move forward.
2 - Assess feelings vs. facts
Our perception may seem like reality, but you must realize that what you think and feel is not always the truth. Imposter syndrome feeds off our self-doubt and insecurities, creating clouds of dust that aren’t really there so that we end up not fulfilling our potential and achieving success. So it’s time to assess feelings vs. facts - what exists only in your head, and what actually exists in reality? When imposter syndrome comes for me, I think about my Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees; I think about how I brought my business to 6 figures and the rest of my accomplishments. These facts don’t mesh with the thoughts running through my mind - aka feeling like a fraud, that I don’t belong, and that I’m inadequate. Once you face the facts instead of your feelings, imposter syndrome can make its way out the door!
3 - Activate a plan
You can’t change your mindset without a plan of action! Create a plan on how to fight back against imposter syndrome when it starts to hit. Breathing exercises, practicing mindfulness, redirecting your thought patterns, and remembering your accomplishments are some aspects you can add into your plan; whatever you plan you decide on, make sure to be consistent with it. Don’t activate a plan and never go through with it! Be strong and keep pushing forward until imposter syndrome is in the past.

It’s completely normal for someone to experience imposter syndrome - no one goes around thinking that they’re the best and unstoppable all the time (that’s right - no one). Inner confidence isn’t about believing you’re the G.O.A.T. - it’s about believing that everything you have and everything you are is enough, and you don’t need anyone (or imposter syndrome) to tell you differently!
