How to Communicate Strategically and Proactively

As the General Manager of Illus Lighting, I understand that there’s an art to conveying opportunities, issues, and changes to our workforce—it requires strategic and proactive communication.

Communicating strategically might seem like an obvious leadership skill, but research shows otherwise. In a survey of 1,000 employees, 91% expressed that their leaders lack good communication skills. Ineffective communication can cost small companies $420,000 a year and jumps to $64.2 million for larger organizations. Good communicators, like us, take a thoughtful approach to maximize our team’s potential.

What Does It Mean to Communicate Strategically?

Communicating strategically means encouraging our team to align with our mission and values. It aims to inform individuals so they can:

1. Understand how changes affect them.

2. Know what actions they need to take.

3. Feel motivated to strengthen relationships and build a high-performing environment.

Why Is This Important?

1. Keeps Team Members Informed: When team members aren’t in the loop, silos form. This threatens cohesion and engagement. Strategic communication keeps everyone aligned and fosters trust.

2. Empowers Individuals: By helping our team understand how their roles impact organizational goals, we unite them in working toward common objectives.

The Benefits of Communicating Strategically

Research shows that businesses with leaders who communicate effectively are:

· Twice as likely to outperform competitors.

· More likely to experience increased commitment and job satisfaction.

· Able to earn a 19.4% higher marketing premium.

3 Ways to Communicate Strategically and Proactively

1. Provide the Big Picture: Many leaders explain what’s changing but don’t address the why and how. By fleshing these out, we help our team understand the impacts and feel motivated to take the right steps.

2. Adapt Your Communication Style: Communication barriers can arise from different styles. Conducting surveys to identify these can help us tailor our messages for better influence.

3. Establish a Call to Action: Every message should conclude with a strong call to action. For example, when introducing a new initiative, encourage team members to set realistic goals that align with our objectives.

By focusing on these strategies, I aim to foster a culture of communication that not only informs but inspires our team at Illus Lighting.
