How do I track time?
When working for clients, they often want to know how I track the hours I charge them. Client trust is something I value highly. Of course, while working through Fiverr, Freelancer or Upwork, customers know those platforms have their own ways of checking up on a freelancer's work.
However, some clients find me through Facebook, Linkedin, or even Instagram. They don't have a reason to trust me that much, and most of the times, don't know me yet. So, I do one of two things: I either set a fixed price for a single project, or I use time tracking software for ongoing projects.
Schedules are agreed upon prior to starting the project. This way, my client is always welcome to give me a call during the hours I'm working on his project, or ask for a print screen. As for the software I use, I prefer Clockify (clockify.me), since it allows me to generate reports per project, or per client. Not bad for a free software!
Using Clockify, I always know how many hours I've worked, and at what rates. Did I work from home? Did I go to my customer's office? Am I charging extras for a specific project? Since there is an app available, I can track my working hours with my smartphone as well as my laptop. Also, my client knows just as much as me. Transparent and honest work is the best path for a freelancer.
