HOW DOES A SCIENTIST GET A JOB IN THE PRIVATE SECTOR (PART 1)
Full time positions (especially tenure track ones) for scientists in academia are difficult to find, which is why more scientists are considering working in the private sector. Most scientists have a CV (Curriculum Vitae) that is lengthy and extremely detailed.
The longest CV I ever received was 104 pages. The Latin translation of CV is “course of life.” It was all there; from the womb to the present.
The following are some tips for converting a CV to a Resume:
Shrink the CV – Unless you have held multiple contract positions, a resume should be no longer than 2 pages. For most scientists this is a difficult activity since they don’t know what to emphasize and what to exclude. Remove Publications, Conferences, Presentations, Posters, Guest Appearances, Trips, and Voluntary Service. You need to orient the resume towards how you might impact (positively) the bottom line. Misquoting the movie “Honey, I Shrunk the Resume” needs to be your focus.
Eliminate Technical Jargon – A post graduate degree is a major achievement but for a resume all you should mention is Ph.D., Discipline, School, Year (optional). Your thesis topic is omitted. Even if you are a recent graduate keep the highly technical language off the resume. Include leadership and social capability, especially if it could help improve the bottom line. Working as a team member, being innovative and creative and finding practical applications for your work is important and should be mentioned.
Adjust your Significant Words – Search the internet for postings in your specialty used by research organizations or companies. By analyzing these advertisements, you will find there are some significant words that are used repeatedly. Find a way to use these keywords in your resume.
Keep in mind that the only purpose of the resume is to generate an interview. By definition, a resume that generates interviews is an excellent resume. Hopefully these suggestions will help you land more interviews that lead to your dream job in the private sector.
