How To Get The Weight Of The World Off Your Shoulders

It has been nearly six months since my father-in-law passed. It was sudden, my wife is an only child, and she had a very close relationship with her dad, complete with father-daughter trips and doing projects together. It was special to watch them interact.

A few short months after his passing, we closed on our new home in Delaware, adding two hours to our distance from her mother. Though, honestly, we could live right next door and we would still be too far away for her liking.

I suppose that being a seventy-seven-year-old Italian woman in Chantilly, VA, with no immediate family close by can feel a little disconcerting. It makes sense, and so does the stress Yvette feels when trying to figure out how to arrange the world so that everyone and everything is okay—something she unknowingly counted on from her father.

When Stress Claims Your Sleep

Seeing Yvette’s stress level claim her sleep, I asked her to share about the things that were on her mind. The list wasn’t terribly long, but the time and resources needed to handle each stressor felt monumental. Everything felt big, and even though nothing was urgent, it felt urgent.

Having come to the other side of some monumental, grief-infused, challenges in my own life, I knew enough to ask Yvette, in the heat of her fear-filled frustration, “Where’s God in this equation?” Knowing that she doesn’t relate well to the word God, I quickly rephrased my question—“Where’s your higher power?”

It's Easy To Be Affected By Fear

I had never seen her in so much pain and fear before, and I couldn’t help but be affected by it. Recognizing our heightened level of tension, an idea came to me. Honestly, I had done something similar in the past, and it didn’t quite have the effect I wanted, so I wasn’t sure that it would make much of a difference.

Rather than question my idea, we jumped in the car and headed down to a spot where the water flows out into the ocean.

As it turns out, this exercise helped both of us more than I could have imagined. Within just a few hours, we were laughing and talking about her upcoming trip to visit her mom with a hint of excitement, rather than the fear that had been there. While I appreciated the immediate shift in both of us, I had my doubts about how she would do after she returned from her trip with her mom.

Past trips had left her completely depleted and full of worry and fear for her mom’s future. This time, though, she was different. This time she had joyful stories to share, and easier access to seeing her fear-filled, negative, pattern, and pulled herself out of it quicker. I’m so inspired by the impact of this little exercise that I want to share it with you.

Here’s what we did to take the weight of the world off our shoulders—

1.    We grabbed a piece of paper and pen and headed for the water.

2.    We remembered that the sun is the exact distance from the earth to allow us to be warmed, but not burned. Whatever made that happen can handle the things we were fearing too.

3.    We remembered that we don’t need to understand gravity for gravity to work, and we don’t need to understand prayers for them to work either.

4.    We took turns writing our fears onto tiny pieces of paper, one-by-one, and then we put them into the water, saying, “Thank you” to our higher powers for taking these fears.

5.    Once we got all of our fears onto paper and put into the stream, we picked a couple of dreams and released them into the water too. “Thank you, HP, Thank you!”

As we were finishing up, I looked at Yvette and said, “When you find yourself worrying about one of the things you gave to mother nature today, remember this moment… remember that you gave it to your higher power, and that you don’t need to worry about it anymore… it’s being taken care of for you.” While I’m not sure that she used that strategy, I did!

When I found myself worrying about of the things I put in the water the very next morning, I chuckled, and then let it go. How about you? What do you find yourself worrying endlessly about? Have you tried asking your higher power for help?

I’m not sure why but doing the exercise with Yvette seemed to make a difference for me.
