How I Hit Burnout After a Huge Q4 — and What I Learned

Are you running on empty and already dreading the holidays?

If you’re waking up feeling the pressure this October and you feel like you might be stressed or close to burning out, you’re not alone. Many business owners are feeling the strain after a tricky Q3. It’s that time of year when the pressure to finish strong can feel overwhelming, and if you don’t take control, it’s easy to get trapped in a cycle of stress. But here’s the good news — you can absolutely turn things around. I know because I’ve been there myself.

Last December, after juggling two demanding roles, I hit a wall. I had just pulled off the Australian Marketing Institute's Gala in October, followed by managing (and delivering) the website development with a massive rebranding for the AMI on behalf of Bruce Clay Australia in early December. By the time the holidays came around, I was utterly burnt out and unable to enjoy any of it with my family.

Burnout doesn't just appear out of nowhere. It creeps up slowly, fed by constant overwork, endless demands, and the pressure to deliver. As we head into Q4, if you’re already feeling the weight of it all, it’s time to hit pause. Take a proactive approach and implement these strategies to regain control and reduce stress.

1. Post Less, Post Better

By December last year, I was glued to social media, trying to keep up with every platform and update, thinking that if I just pushed a bit harder, I’d keep up. But I was wrong. I was overextending myself, and it wasn’t worth it.

Here’s what I wish I had done: schedule 8-10 high-quality posts for the month and leave it at that. Focus on quality over quantity. Once those posts are scheduled, switch off social media. No scrolling, no obsessing over the next big thing. Just respond when necessary and protect your mental space.

Trust me, your business won’t crumble because you’re not glued to the screen all day. You’ll perform better because you’ve taken care of your energy.

2. Say No, and Mean It

Last year, I said yes to everything — every opportunity, every meeting, every extra task. By the end of the year, I had spread myself way too thin. If I had just said no earlier, I could have avoided feeling overwhelmed and burnt out.

This time, I’ve learned to say no to things I no longer have the headspace for. No is a complete sentence — you don’t need to justify it or feel guilty. Protecting your energy is more important than keeping up appearances or overcommitting.

Remember, when you say yes to everything, you’re saying no to your well-being. The stress will pile up, not just for this month but for the next as well. Set boundaries now, and future-you will thank you.

3. Focus on One Thing for Q4

In the frantic attempt to end the year strong, I tried to push too many things — multiple jobs, offers, and projects. Big mistake. I ended up burning out without hitting my actual goals.

Here’s my advice: focus on one thing this Q4. Choose one offer or product, and do it really well. Don’t try to juggle too many things at once or overwhelm your audience. Focusing on one thing gives you the clarity to perform at your best.

When you scatter your attention, you’re not only hurting your business — you’re also putting unnecessary pressure on yourself. Trust that doing one thing exceptionally well will bring better results, both for your business and your mental health.

4. Watch What You Eat (and Drink)

Last December, I was running on fumes, and my diet certainly didn’t help. Processed foods, too much alcohol, late nights... it all compounded the problem. By the time Christmas rolled around, I felt like I’d been hit by a truck.

If you’re feeling stressed, cut back on alcohol and processed food. I’m not saying you have to give it up forever—just for a month. Give your body a break. Eating clean will help you get your energy back and clear the brain fog. Plus, you’ll sleep better, which will make everything else easier to handle.

5. Support Your Nervous System

When you’re running on stress, your nervous system is in overdrive, and your cortisol levels are through the roof. That’s what happened to me last year—I was constantly in “fight or flight” mode, and it wasn’t sustainable.

This time, I’ve made small but powerful changes to help support my nervous system. You don’t need a major lifestyle overhaul to feel better—just start with little things. Take a 10-minute walk outside, use a sensate machine, or try box breathing. These small practices can help lower your cortisol levels and give your body the break it needs.

The key is to do these things consistently. Even small steps, done regularly, can make a big difference in how you feel.

6. Remember: Tough Times Are Part of the Journey

Last year, I felt like I was failing because I was struggling. But here’s what I learned — every human (and business) goes through tough times. The ups and downs are part of the journey, and the pressure you’re feeling doesn’t define your success.

Instead of comparing yourself to others or racing to the finish line, give yourself space to breathe. Take a step back, regroup, and trust that you’ll figure it out. You’ve done it before, and you’ll do it again.

There’s no need to rush. Slow down, focus on what matters, and trust yourself. The results will follow.

Final Thoughts

Burnout is real, and it sneaks up on you faster than you realise. If you’re feeling the pressure heading into Q4, take action now. Don’t wait until you’re too overwhelmed to enjoy the holidays or spend time with your loved ones. You don’t need to push yourself to the brink to succeed. By setting boundaries, focusing on what matters, and taking care of your health, you can finish the year strong without sacrificing your well-being.
