How Provider Engagement Can Transform Healthcare

Healthcare is undergoing a major shift from fee-for-service to value-based care, where providers are rewarded for improving quality, reducing costs, and enhancing patient satisfaction. However, achieving these goals is not possible without the active participation and collaboration of healthcare providers and patients, who are the core of care delivery and decision-making.

Provider engagement is the degree to which providers are committed to the mission, vision, and values of their organization, and are willing to contribute to its success. Engaged providers are more likely to adopt best practices, embrace innovation, and collaborate with other stakeholders. They are also more likely to deliver patient-centered care, which involves understanding each patient's needs, preferences, and goals, and engaging them as partners in their care.

Patient-centered care is a key component of value-based care, as it recognizes the patient as the primary source of control and direction in the care process ¹. Patient-centered care respects the patient's autonomy, dignity, and values, and empowers them to make informed choices about their health and well-being. Patient-centered care also fosters a symbiotic relationship between provider and patient, where both parties benefit from mutual trust, respect, and communication.

Patient-centered care has been shown to contribute to improved patient outcomes, such as greater satisfaction with care, reduced symptoms, improved quality of life and well-being, better adherence, self-management, and outcomes, as well as lower utilization and costs ²³⁴. For example, a study by the Annals of Family Medicine found that patients who reported higher levels of trust, empathy, and shared decision-making with their providers had lower levels of hemoglobin A1c, blood pressure, and body mass index, as well as higher levels of self-rated health and quality of life ³. Another study by BMC Health Services Research found that more patient-centered organizations also have more positive outcomes, such as greater job satisfaction among healthcare professionals, increased quality and safety of care, and greater health equity ⁴.

Provider engagement and patient-centered care are not one-time events, but continuous processes that require constant monitoring and improvement. Providers and patients need to measure the impact of their engagement efforts, using metrics such as satisfaction, loyalty, advocacy, and performance. They also need to solicit feedback from each other and use it to refine their engagement strategies and tactics. By doing so, they can create a win-win situation for themselves and the global healthcare system.
