I can’t speak for everyone, but I myself am tired of hearing about the “Great Resignation” - the trend of employees leaving their jobs in large numbers during the COVID-19 pandemic. I was one of the lucky ones with a good, consistent job throughout the crazy past few years, and for that I am eternally grateful. I know the pandemic wreaked havoc on the world – with some industries being hit much harder than others – and I know many employees in general have felt disenfranchised for a long time.
Many of these displaced workers and many more who weren’t as adversely affected took this as an opportunity to search for better work-life balance, higher pay, or more fulfilling work. If you are one of the many people who decided to leave your job during this time you may have realized that the grass is not always greener or that your career rebound or rebrand hasn’t been as smooth as you’d hoped it would be. Here are some tips to help you rebound and find a new career opportunity:
- Assess your skills and interests: Take some time to reflect on your skills and interests and consider what types of jobs would be a good fit for you. Consider seeking guidance from a career coach or mentor to help you identify potential career paths.
- Network: Reach out to your professional and personal networks to let them know that you are looking for new opportunities. Attend job fairs, industry events, and virtual networking events to meet new people and expand your connections.
- Update your resume and online profiles: Make sure your resume and online profiles (such as LinkedIn) are up-to-date and showcase your skills and experience. Customize your resume for each job you apply for to increase your chances of getting noticed. Focus on transferrable skills and how you’ve solved problems and overcome challenges in your career.
- Be open to new opportunities: Don't limit yourself to jobs that are exactly like your previous role. Be open to new opportunities that may utilize your skills in a different way or offer new challenges and growth opportunities.
- Be patient and persistent: Finding a new job can take time, so be patient and persistent in your search. S organized and track your applications and follow-up actions to stay on top of your job search.
- Stay Positive and learn to take pleasure in the pause: One day very soon you’ll get that new job and things will be back on track. You’ll be working full time and you won’t have quite the flexibility in your calendar that you have now. Make sure you reward yourself for sending out those resumes, making those calls, getting through another week with a positive attitude… Appreciate the here and now.
By following these tips, you can rebound from the Great Resignation and find a new career opportunity that aligns with your skills and interests. Remember to stay positive, focused, and open to new possibilities.
