HOW SOCIAL & LIVE-STREAM COMMERCE WILL RULE & REIGN OVER 2022!

Every year, digital marketing seems to get more complex. Yet, it continues to cement itself as an instrumental weapon for marketers today. In addition to fundamental areas like SEO, PPC, branding and UI-UX, marketers now also have to watch-out and manage emerging social channels, accompanied by evolving regulations, along with content, automation and personalization…the list goes on.

One way that marketers must leverage, as an attempt to own 2022, is by better utilisation of social commerce and exploring live streams for their audiences. The use of social media platforms to share quality video content, in addition to live streaming interactions with influencers, for the benefit and awareness of the audience, are what social and live stream commerce encompass. Live commerce is the combination of streaming video and e-commerce, which promises to revolutionize the retail industry and consumer shopping habits.

People today don’t mind spending their time at home instead of attending live events or product launches, owing to the impact of the pandemic and subsequent lockdowns. The key to marketing this way is by focusing on relevant influencers, backed by a loyal audience. When surveyed, 80% of the people actually prefer to engage with live videos instead of pre-recorded ones. This allows them to get immersed in communication, engage with the influencers, talk about the product, and even make shopping decisions while watching the live streams.

Moreover, brands must harness the power of user-generating video platforms and tools like TikTok, Instagram reels, etc. to experiment with the creative side of marketing, or to speak on current affairs, and spark conversations among their audiences. Some noteworthy examples in recent times are clear indicators of this fact.

For instance, international cosmetics brand ‘Milani’ has doubled its sales over the past few weeks. Now how’s that? Milani chose to make a smart move by refuting a piece of evidence that involved its brand name in a high profile, ongoing lawsuit. The brand created and uploaded a video for this on TikTok, which has now gone pretty viral, and has generated massive support, positive reviews and a loyal brand following. Taking a risk and weighing in with public opinion has won the brand some great numbers.

Loyal consumers of the mega brand ‘Apple' always await the arrival of a live product launch. Millions of people, from all corners of the world, witness and anticipate what Apple is going to introduce next. This strategy is, of course, the brainchild of its beloved founder, Steve Jobs.

India-based consumer electronics brand, ‘boAt’ has also recently been able to workout some positive figures, with their founder’s latest stint, as a judge on Shark Tank India. They went a step further and even took forward their association with one of the contestants, a 11-year-old visually impaired child. The brand awarded him a unique scholarship, in view of potential and zeal. The video of this interaction has received a great response on all social platforms.

These instances reinforce the very fact that video content – both live and recorded – will never stop being a leading content-based engagement medium.

Since most of the targeted audience comprises millennials or the Gen-Z, brands can tap into their 'FOMO' and harness it advantageously to familiarize them with the product. Instagram and Facebook have seen a notable hike in users' engagement with live videos. In fact, TikTok's strategic dive into live video features could also become an all-time sensation in 2022. Brands can also utilize OTT platforms to generate more live video content, like using Amazon live to organize promotional events.
