How to be Subject Matter Expert in any field evenif you are totally Novice in that area!!
In last one decade, I have learned many unconventional skills (although being a Chartered Accountant) as when needed very quickly in couple of months. To list a few, I would say
- Online Course Creation
- Digital Marketing
- Wordpress Site Management
- Sales Funnel Creation
- Book Writing
- SEO
- Public Speaking
- Outsourcing Practice
- Advance Excel
- Productivity Tools
and the list is too long.....
Also, I am in the process of learning Data Analytics, Big Data, Machine Learning etc…
How I would recommend you to deep dive into any new area is by following these simple steps to connect to all stakeholders.
1. First is always to find out if there are any Regulator is there in this area. If yes, Browse its website for resources. Also, if there is any exam?! Exam might be paid but the resources can be availed free of cost most of the times.
2. Second is to find out the Enablers. For example, Intuit (Quickbooks Developer company) has its Tax solution Product. They must have their own resources, knowledge articles etc to help its customers (Tax Practitioners). They might also have their own Certifications or courses.
3. The next important source of information is to find an active Community or Forum in this area. This will help you to answer your questions in this area by experts in this field. For example, Microsoft Community is there for each office tools where all Microsoft MVP are present to answer your questions quickly. Quickbooks Community is also a good place to get your answers quickly by experts. You will also learn exploring questions from others. And If you participate in the community, it would be best knowledge enhancement for you in this area.
4. One of the most promising sources of deep information/insights is BOOKS. Try to find out books on this area by authors who are pioneer in this field. Just try to find E-Books on Amazon on this area. You can also Google search for good Free books. Below are two website where I rely on to get free books (however taxation books might be less available in below links as they are not in great demand)

5. Next is to find out Courses or videos. The important source can be Youtube Channels (some are really good that they are University in itself, like ExcelisFun Channel is the most reputed and indepth knowledge resource in Excel). The next source for courses can be Udemy or Coursea where you can find good course for almost free.
6. Other important source of knowledge in any area is the WEBSITES. Many websites are developed and maintained by enthusiastic who want to share knowledge. When I was trying to learn Wordpress, I came into touch with a Vast repository of information on Wordpress at WPBeginner website. Chandoo.org is a good website for Excel knowledge. You will find plethora of information on this website/blogs. Subscribe to their Newsletter so you will get all updated information regularly.
7. Last is to find major active Facebook Groups to join where you get answers to your questions, updates on the area and Resources.
8. I also take help of Support provided by Softwares or services I use. It will help you when you are stuck and need resolution to your problem.
9. Also Studying what Competitors are doing in what I am trying to create is also helpful.
If you connect with all the above stakeholders in the area you want to deep dive from Zero, you will quickly get expertise within couple of months. You can also find Facebook Pages, LinkedIn Influencers, Podcasts, Medium (or other blog) and other social media resources to follow.
