How to unleash motivation using pain & urgency

Learning how to unleash motivation using pain and urgency was a critical skill in helping me plan my escape from employee to entrepreneur… and design the life and business I love.

Instead of complaining about how unhappy I was with my career… I used this negative emotion as fuel for motivation to create change. It’s at the intersection of pain and urgency where motivation to change - to go for what your want is accelerated. Instead of giving up on a great life, I learned to motivate myself from the pain of waking up each day with regret - from not being able to live with myself as a chicken-shit by not taking a chance on living my passion… knowing I had so much unrealized potential and experience left on the table of life. My motivation also came from the feeling of urgency that my life could not continue like it was, because as a middle-aged man, I was running out of time.

I unleashed my motivation the day I became a lone survivor

I remember the exact day I hit the intersection of pain and urgency - the day my motivation was totally unleashed. It was the day I became a “lone survivor.” This is the day I knew I had to take massive sustained action, expecting more from myself, and doing what it took to experience more in life. I was determined to finally design the life and business I love, and would not quit until I achieved this goal. Let me explain more about what happened and how my “lone survivor” experience forever affected me in a huge way.

This happened the day my entire careers’ worth of work, and all the successful projects I had implemented, and that had made a difference in the lives of the people - were all canceled without warning. Any legacy I believed I had been building would soon be forgotten. New policies were enacted by people wanting to take the organization in another direction. The many years of work I did was all for naught. It was a low point for me on many levels.

But the real kicker came soon after the policy change when massive job cuts got announced. All my colleagues, many of whom had become good friends, were fired. I saw about 20 hardworking and dedicated employees have their livelihoods suddenly disrupted - their families’ lives changed forever in about a matter of minutes. Somehow, through all these cuts and changes, I was untouched. I still had a job. I was a lone survivor.

To this day, I still don’t know why I survived for as long as I have in my job. Whatever the reason, it was a lot for me to process. I felt sad, feeling for my friends, angry about the decisions made by the organization, and yet, I was grateful to still have my job, but unsure about my future.

When I hit the intersection of pain and urgency I changed forever and never looked back

The day I hit the intersection of pain and urgency, something inside me changed forever. I determined I would never again be fully committed to any employer, and would never get caught with my guard down again. I was not going to leave my destiny in the hands of someone else, dancing like a puppet. I needed to take control back, and I could not afford to wait.

In my mind, it was like the hit movie “Lone Survivor” with Mark Wahlberg, except I was the star in my own reality show. Of course, my battle for survival was not life or death, and I wasn’t in a war zone in Afghanistan. Although the scene took place in a cushy office building, my personal battle threatened my livelihood and my family’s quality of life.

In my situation, I was physically unharmed, but the situation had a profoundly adverse emotional effect on me. I found myself pushed in a new direction, vehement that I be in control of the rest of my life. For better or worse, I was forever changed. It became clear I wouldn't bet on a future in the career and organization to which I had committed more than twenty years of my life.

I was restless from the lack of job security, and lack of personal fulfillment. The financial perks of my career now seemed inadequate. I looked at my employment purely as billable hours. It was sad to have to admit I was on the wrong path, and scary because I didn’t know how to course-correct.

I know my experience was not unique – many employees realize it after years of commitment to the wrong career. The good news is when you can resolve to find a new way forward, you’ve won half the battle.

“Experience is not what happens to a man, it is what a man does with what happens to him.” - Aldous Huxley, writer and philosopher

At the intersection of pain and urgency I became obsessed with escaping from employee to freedom-entrepreneur

My true commitment became my own well-being instead of my employers. I became obsessed with changing my situation, demanding more for myself and being in control of my life. I was on a new path - one that would be determined by no one but myself. It was not going to be easy - all I knew was the life of being an employee. But my motivation had been unleashed, and I was now unstoppable - the first step to designing my new life and business based on passion and my ultimate desires.

I let go of my career aspirations, and developed new aspirations as a freedom-preneur. As I pursued my dream, I did battle uncertainty due to strong mental chokeholds - the social conditioning that makes us conform. But I was committed to breaking through to my next-level life and business - there was no turning back. Before my lone survivor experience, it was easy to taint ambition with doubts, but now I was pushing forward, sticking to my vision and acting from desire more powerful than playing it safe.
