How to Upgrade Your Twitter Game: 10 Tips
I already wrote about how to increase your Twitter followers a couple of months back.
Since then, I have learnt a thing or two about how best to do things in order to grow consistently, increase engagement and avoid problems such as the account being restricted by Twitter.
So here are my quick tips - some I mentioned before but they are worth repeating.
Hopefully, they'll help you to experiment and see some results.
- Follow active accounts i.e. accounts that have interacted with content recently. In order to see growth, you need to follow active accounts. Following active accounts means clicking "Follow" on those that have liked or retweeted relevant “trending” tweets recently.
- If you are following people, do it manually and have some 2 minutes or so elapsing between the following the first 10 people and the next 10 people. This allows Twitter to understand that you are not a robot. Doing this well will also allow you to follow up to 400 people in a day especially if your pace is relaxed so as to seem non-robotic. Using apps will potentially cause some restriction problems with Twitter. Trust me, I've been there.
- Have a specific number for tweets that you will click like to every day. This allows you to increase your exposure and get a couple more potential followers for your account. It also tells the algorithm that your account is active and likely that its tweets should be shown to more people.
- Be sure to unfollow accounts that don’t follow you back every day so as to improve your follower-following ratio. At a certain point, if the ratio is terrible, you will not be able to follow more people.
- Experiment with witty or educative text posts. Reduce the obsession with graphics for every tweet. Text posts are the in thing right now.
- Explore using GIFs when replying to mentions or retweets. It adds a bit of sparkle, fun and personality.
- Remember to do follow backs to accounts that follow you without you having followed them.
- Explore social listening with Hootsuite in order to jump into conversations regarding your brand or anything to do with your industry. Be sure to use the right search terms. I have found this to be extremely valuable in increasing engagements.
- Explore advanced search on Twitter in order to find specific tweets that are related to your topic of choice so that you can use them to find relevant accounts to follow. Refer back to number 1.
- Have fun.
