A family that marathons together...

Last weekend the whole family headed down for the CHCH marathon to do the half. It was a bloody good day.

This run was the end event for the current 90 day sprint. Each 90 days I plot out some goals for me, we and the business. Having a good combination of health, wellness, connection, and business goals to elevate my corporate athlete status!

I had always used this method of breaking down the inputs to get sh*t done in business but only in the last few years I have made it personal. What I realised is it's all related - life, relationships, business. If one leg of the stool is wonky then it's all a bit shakey and fragile.

90 days ago I set out to get a new half PB as part of a family shared running goal, increase State of Play distribution by 20% and get to 90kgs (down from 98)

These goals work for me in 90 day blocks. By the time four of them are done in a year I look back and think, shesh that was a busy year! a lot has happened!

During my run around central Christchurch I day dreamed about life 4 years ago when prospects were less rosy, and I remembered the moment I decided to commit to Grant 2.0. At the time we were 2 months into hard lockdown in Amsterdam and the world was in Covid chaos, the family life turned upside down, and I was in a totally fog, stuck, world class procrastinator, 145kgs, and drinking to numb.

The turning point

Taking personal responsibility and committing to change was when my son Leo and I shaved each others heads - The barbers had been shut for months and unlikely to reopen, we were shaggy and totally bored. More than a cut it felt like we were taking charge, making a decision, we had a huge laugh at ourselves and each other. Not long after this I gave up the drink and got busy living.

I also knew that it was even harder on the kids and how I behaved would be noticed by them. I needed to be the change so they could see there was a way to get through this and take responsibility and control of your life. Make a decision, commit. Make another decision, commit. They see everything you do.

We certainly wouldn't have had this experience at the marathon if we made different choices 4 years ago.

Buzzcuts for the Boys, Bored and Bushy and getting some control back

And yes a new PB today 2:12 was a 15 minute improvement on last years AKL Half. Very close to 90kg on the scales (I'm sure I got there after a soak in the hot pools in Hamner Springs afterwards).

Third target to increase State of Play Distribution by 20% we absolutely smashed it! We have hit 55% grocery distribution up from 35% and the mix pack is now the 3 highest rate of sale for a craft zero!

I also saw the latest scan data and for another quarter we are still NZ's fastest growing brewery at +80% qtr on qtr. This is huge and sets us up to push to be in more stores with the whole range.

So whats in store for the next 90 days?

For the next 90 days we will go big for Dry July and continue our 80% growth. I'm going to hit the road and visit all our stores across the North Island.

It will be great to get some big displays ready for July - this is our second busiest selling month as lots of Kiwis give the zeros a go for a month, and maybe longer.

This will be NZ's biggest and most popular Dry July. Hopefully a great time for heaps of kiwis to try State of Play.

Also both Foodstuffs and Woolworths are doing full beer reviews to new ranging so a really important conversation for State of Play.

I need a plan to get under 2 hours for the AKL Half marathon. Any ideas on training tools or groups to join?

Brilliant and inspiring. 5 years since I stopped alcohol and without doubt my proudest achievement. Love seeing your business evolve. Re sub 2hours, get some interval and hill work in to increase V02 max. Good luck.
