The Ignorant Messiah
A Spiritual Message for Saturday
It was International World Book Day this week. I was curious to see which books had captured the imaginations of generations - at least as measured by book sales. One that brought a smile to my face was, "Jonathan Livingston Seagull," by Richard Bach. It's a New Age tale of awakening - one that requires no specific faith to find it acceptable - to me, a parable about continuous learning. A less well known book by him is, "Illusions: The Adventures of a Reluctant Messiah."
If you come from a firmly Christian paradigm, the book, sweet though it is, is more about Dellusions than Illusions - Richard Bach peddles a belief system that requires no sacrifice, no commitment, and certainly doesn't bother itself with uncomfortable concepts like moral sin. I enjoyed it, though, because it made me think - and ideas are my favourite currency. It's not a book I'd recommend to Christians who aren't utterly confident in their faith because it is, at heart, anti our Christ and the story of hope that is the message of redemption. So why mention it?
Without this book, I am unlikely to have thought about putting descriptors in front of the word, "Messiah." As a writer, giving myself permission to do this is highly inspiring. Thus, "The Ignorant Messiah," as an idea, was born.
Who is the Ignorant Messiah? Certainly not Jesus of Nazareth! But if you are what the media would call a, "Born Again Christian," you are highly likely to be an Ignorant Messiah!
If that sounds negative, it's only my lovingly meant means to hook your interest. In truth, you (and I) being an Ignorant Messiah is very good news.
The Meaning of Messiah
The Hebrew concept is of someone 'anointed' with oil as a setting apart for a specific Divinely-ordained role. David leaps immediately to mind as he is anointed with oil to become King of Israel - a foretaste of Jesus as King of Kings. In 1 Kings 19:16, Elijah is commanded to anoint Elisha to be prophet in his place:
Anoint Jehu the son of Nimshi to be king over Israel; and anoint Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel Meholah to be prophet in your place.
There's a vast difference between 'THE' Messiah - Jesus and 'a' Messiah. However, it is my suggestion is that Christians are little-messiahs! Little-Ignorant-Messiahs!
Why would I make such a bold statement?
I would make such a bold statement because there is work to do. Jesus most deliberately trained up His disciples to be like Him and thus to magnify and multiply His work. He specifically said,
A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone when he is fully trained will be like his teacher.
Luke 6:40 (to be read in context)
As a disciple - you are chosen and appointed to do good works that God has prepared in advance for us to do:
For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared before that we would walk in them.
Ephesisans 2:10
And Jesus says to His Disciples
You didn’t choose me, but I chose you and appointed you, that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain; that whatever you will ask of the Father in my name, he may give it to you.
John 15:16
I pop the Ephesians' Scripture into this flow first because you and I may be forgiven for thinking Jesus was only referring to the Apostles. No, He means you and me too - God has chosen us and appointed us to bear abiding fruit - good fruit.
But appointed doesn't guarantee you're anointed!
The Difference that Makes a Difference
The difference that makes the big difference is the baptism in the Holy Spirit. When King David, God's anointed, leaned on his own understanding, terrible consequences flowed into his life and into the lives of those he ruled for.
When I have tried to sort out my life, terrible consquences have come upon not just me but also upon my beloved family. We are not islands. We are not in isolation. We are part of a spiritual ecosystem where each part plays a part and affects all the other parts.
What's the right path?
Then He opened their minds, that they might understand the Scriptures. He said to them, “Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day, and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name to all the nations, beginning at Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things. Behold, I send out the promise of my Father on you. But wait in the city of Jerusalem until you are clothed with power from on high.”
Luke 24: 45-49
This reminds me of one of the most powerful Anti-Religious Scriptures!
Jesus, frustrated at the ignorance of the so-called Religious Professionals of His time, says
But Jesus answered them, “You are mistaken, not knowing the Scriptures, nor the power of God."
Matthew 22:29
This is utterly scandalous and offensive! Just imagine how you'd feel if you'd dedicated your life to memorising and exploring the Scriptures only to have this out-of-town Country preacher say, "You haven't even started! You've got it all wrong!"
Two aspects are necessary and both are gifts of God. Firstly, the promised Holy Spirit - Whose coming is described as being 'clothed' with power from on high, and, secondly, the opening of the mind to understand the Scriptures.
Which leads me to my favourite portion of the New Coventant - two disciples on The Road to Emmaus.
They said to one another, “Weren’t our hearts burning within us, while he spoke to us along the way, and while he opened the Scriptures to us?”
Luke 24:32 (yes, 'opening', twice in one chapter!)
Conclusion
Over the centuries between the Ascension and now, generations have come and gone where the only Jesus they've been able to see, touch, hear, witness has been His followers. We haven't done a very good job most of the time, have we?!
Why?
Because we've been ignorant - we haven't had the Scriptures opened to us enough to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. And we haven't been clothed with power - anointed - from on high.
But today is different.
Today, you and I have the advantage. I have been delighted how easy and fast it has been for me to source the Scriptures I wanted to share with you.

This means that you and I in collaboration with The Holy Spirit have zero barriers to opening our minds to the Scriptures. He must do the opening, but the source material is available to all with Internet access.
Secondly, He is looking for those who are ready to listen. These (and only these) can He safely anoint with power from on high and from within - clothing us with power so that we can get on with the works that God the Father has foreordained that we should be getting on with.
Wait for Him...
Today, then, if you hear His voice - don't harden your heart in rebellion. Lay aside the distractions of entertainment and busyness, and get with the Divine Programme.
I may be an Ignorant Messsiah but I'm on the training programme! You, too, may not yet know God as fully as you are fully known by Him, but you can also be on the programme.
We need to be 'Jesus' to this generation until He comes back in bodily form - until then
- We are the Body of Christ
- We are the Temple of The Holy Spirit
...and the Temple is where generations have gone to meet with God.
Ask to be clothed - anointed - with power from on high, then...
Let people see Jesus in you today.
Let people meet with God through you today.
No, you're not THE Messiah, but you are the first messianic encounter many will have.
Let's make it a good one.
