Impact Report: Investing for a kinder, cleaner, healthier world

We are thrilled to unveil the inaugural Annual Impact & ESG Report for the Beyond Impact Fund II.

This report marks a significant milestone as we showcase the environmental, social, and animal welfare impacts of our investments in the eight companies within our portfolio as of December 31, 2022. It illustrates our commitment to sustainability and innovation, highlighting the correlation between animal lives spared and climate change mitigation.

As we navigate the evolving landscape of sustainable investing, we remain dedicated to working closely with our investee companies to enhance sustainability practices and drive positive change.

Why we need an animal-free economy

Climate change poses one of the gravest threats to our planet, necessitating urgent innovation to curb greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate their impact. According to the RethinkX Food and Agriculture report, transitioning to alternative proteins could capture 10% of the global meat market by 2035, potentially slashing annual emissions by 2.4 gigatons, equivalent to removing 527 million cars from the road. This shift could also save $1.4 trillion in environmental costs by 2050.

Heavy reliance on animal-based foods like meat and dairy correlates with increased risks of chronic and infectious diseases, exacerbating public health challenges worldwide. Moreover, animal industrialisation fosters antimicrobial resistance and zoonotic pandemics, posing global health risks.

Transitioning to sustainable plant-based alternatives aligns with medical and public health priorities and improves working conditions for industry workers. Embracing an animal-free economy promises safer environments and reduced health risks for workers, steering us toward a more sustainable future.

Environmental Impact

The Beyond Impact Fund II portfolio reduced emissions by 97%, land use by 94%, water use by 99% and waste by 25% compared to the benchmark basket of meat & dairy companies.

  • Beyond Impact Fund II demonstrates the highest environmental benefit among peer Food funds compared to the MSCI ACWI Agriculture & Food Chain Index.

Environmental Impact

The fund measures revenue alignment with the UN's 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), categorising it as positive or negative compared to a benchmark. The Beyond Impact Fund II shows a strong (+) 99.99% alignment with SDGs, while the MSCI ACWI Agriculture & Food Chain Index (USD) displays a (-) 36.86% negative alignment, highlighting areas for improvement in supporting these goals within the food and agriculture sectors.

The fund SDG alignment is calculated based on the net revenue aligned with any of the 17 SDGs as well as 11 operational ESG factors. The spider diagrams above shows the alignment, by SDG, for the fund compared to the benchmark.

Environmental and Social Impact

$1M invested in The Beyond Impact Fund II would have spared 276,224 animals and 27.6 million days of animal suffering in 2022, compared to equivalent products from meat and dairy companies. This is akin to 1,587 Americans abstaining from meat for a year.

This impact report demonstrates that the animal-free investing ethos taken by Beyond Impact contributes to climate goals by transforming food production to provide equivalent nutrition, with far less greenhouse gas emissions. Broader environmental goals are also supported by reduced use of natural resources such as land and water, and less pollution reaching rivers and oceans.

Reduced animal lives taken and days of suffering has a positive societal effect, given the social problems brought about by animal industrialisation and slaughter.
