The incredible $50BILLION rail loop -how many jobs is that for Melbourne?
The Australian Daily Mail report
- New $50bn rail loop will be built in Melbourne and slash times for commmuters
- The ambitious plan will connect Melbourne's outer suburbs from east to west
- There are hopes it will bring the city into line with European cities
- A cash boost has also been announced to improve the Monash Freeway
A new rail loop is set to revolutionise travel in Melbourne and slash times for commuters.
The ambitious $50billion plan will connect Melbourne's outer suburbs from east to west, making it quicker for people living outside the city to make it in for work.
The 90km ring from Cheltenham in the outer southeast to Werribee in the far west will link together existing lines which travel in and out of the city centre.
There are hopes it will bring the city into line with European cities like Vienna and London.
The Victorian government has created yet another authority - this time to oversee Melbourne's $50 billion suburban rail loop
Interchanges will be built at Cheltenham, Glen Waverley, Clayton and Box Hill with new stations to be built underground at Monash University in Clayton and Burwood.
The government also announced a supervising authority to oversee the project and to discuss station locations with relevant groups.
'This dedicated new authority will ensure the biggest public transport project in our state's history becomes a reality,' Premier Daniel Andrews said on Tuesday.
The loop will connect to a future airport rail and create three transport 'super hubs' at Clayton, Broadmeadows and Sunshine.
The geotechnical works are underway and registration of interest for firms to build the project are still open.
It is not known if any properties will need to be acquired to build the stations, with the premier flagging he hoped to minimise the impact on local residents.
