Infrastructure Security - Back to My Future

Infrastructure Security - Back to My Future

I'm excited to embark on a new venture through InfraMetric Analytics, a company that aligns with my long-standing interests in specialized cybersecurity and critical infrastructure protection (CIP). It's been 16 years since I published my first book in this area!

InfraMetric – a portmanteau of "infrastructure" and "metrics" – emphasizes applying security best practices and standards to the unique complexities of safeguarding critical infrastructure and research infrastructure.

Why focus on both critical and research infrastructure? The past four years have revealed striking similarities between the operational technology (OT)* inherent in critical infrastructure (CI) sectors (energy, manufacturing, water, etc.)* and the research technology found in high-performance computing (HPC) infrastructure. CI and HPC systems differ significantly from enterprise or cloud IT environments and have distinct security requirements that demand specialized management and technical skills. I'm eager to contribute my expertise in this domain!

Additionally, I'm thrilled to expand my thought leadership activities. I've joined Carleton University's National Centre for Critical Infrastructure Protection, Security and Resilience (NC-CIPSeR) as a contributing researcher. NC-CIPSeR offers incredible opportunities, and I'm excited to collaborate with brilliant minds on impactful projects.

This transition feels like a logical milestone in my career. I began as an "Internet consultant" in 1994, hardening SunOS boxes and building firewalls by hand. Since then, I've primarily focused on solution engineering while developing a body of published works on niche security topics.

Please stay tuned for announcements about upcoming projects and new publications!

* Bryan Singer and I wrote a book about OT security and risk a few years back.

P.S.

In January, I left of my role as VP of Solution Architecture at Cerio.io (formerly Rockport Networks).  It's been an honor to work alongside such a talented team, where innovation is the cornerstone. To everyone at Cerio.io, thank you for the experiences, the lessons, and the opportunities. I look forward to staying connected and witnessing your continued success!

When confronted with seemingly insurmountable challenges always ask yourself: "If not us, who? If not now, when?" Then take that first step...
