The Inner Compass
Navigating Change with Purpose and Drive
It's at this time of year we tend to reflect on the year that's gone and start planning for the year ahead. With a focus on Motivation, the reason why we do things, I'd like to share a few of my observations from working with clients and my own personal achievements
My year started with focus on health and in particular my diet and nutrition, if nothing else I wanted to have a better understanding of what I should be eating. I had joined the Zoe nutrient programme just before Christmas and wanted to put into practice what I had learnt. The biggest learning being, there's no perfect diet for everyone as we are all different.
When making a change I find the best way to approach it is to break it down into what I need to Stop, Start, do more of, less of and continue doing. When you're wanting to control what you are eating the best place to start is what you put in your supermarket basket. I now buy much less ultra processed food, more organic when it's reasonable priced and continue to use the freezer to buy good food when the price is right.
The result of my approach has been a gradual loss of weight, I'm now only 2kg away from my ideal weight and my energy levels are consistently higher than previous. The crucial thing that has changed is I have introduced new healthier habits and dropped less healthy. I now check in with all my clients on their eating habits because I know what a big difference it can make.
You may have noticed I started a New Podcast this year, The Motivated Business Show, where I invite business owners to talk about their expertise and also what keeps them motivated. Having a top motivator of creativity I didn't want to follow the same format as everyone else so I decide to make it a Live Show on Linkedin, Youtube and Facebook.
Over the previous couple of years I had been using streaming software to go live on all platform when I had something I wanted to share. Going Live gives the show a bit of a different vibe and things sometime go wrong but nothing that has stopped the show going on. The show also ticks my second and third most important motivators which are the expert (sharing deep knowledge) and the searcher (making a difference)
When you are clear about your reason to do something you much more likely to stick to it because it gives you energy rather than sap it. If you've missed the 41 episodes you can catch up with all my guests by clicking the image below
Of course life is never perfect, we all have our challenges which we wish we didn't have to deal with, even small set backs can leave you feeling like a failure. I remember at one of my blood donation session there was a problem which meant I didn't donate the full pint. I remember feeling gutted when the nurse told me they wouldn't be able to use my donation
In moment like that it important to check in with why you do it in the first place and there's always something to learn when things go wrong. I reflected that it just goes to show that giving blood isn't a walk in the park I thought it was.
I have worked with some brilliant clients this year who have one thing in common, they all had change to navigate. I use the 7 step M.E.A.S.U.R.E process that I wrote about in my book "motivated" with all my clients which begins with a clear understanding of who they are. This is because I know that this is what I failed to do when I was navigating change and would've made all the difference.

Highlights of my year have been trips to Crete and Sri Lanka and low have been attending the funeral of a past client whose life was tragically taken from him at a much too early age. We are only here for a very short time and we don't know when it's our time so best make the most of the time we have.
If you'd looking to take your life/business in a new direction in the new year, I've just finished putting together a new programme which you can find out all the details by clicking the image below
