Our Heritage of Innovation : From 1901 to Today
For over 120 years, dentsu has stood as a pioneer of innovation, sculpting the advertising and marketing world with trailblazing concepts and campaigns. From new media platforms to harnessing the dynamic duo of data and technology, we've consistently positioned ourselves at the forefront of progress.
The roots of dentsu trace back to 1901 in Tokyo, Japan, when our founder, Hoshio Mitsunaga, embarked on his journey as a war correspondent. Inspired by his experiences, Mitsunaga began a mission to establish a news agency supplying newspapers with timely information, alongside an advertising agency. In 1907, these two ventures merged to form 'Nippon Dempo Tsushin-sha', now recognized globally as dentsu.
From the outset, dentsu has revolutionized the industry, driven by a progressive ethos. Throughout our history, we've consistently pushed the boundaries of advertising and marketing. From pioneering television commercials in the 1950s to spearheading digital advertising in the 1990s, our innovative spirit has been the driving force behind our evolution and success.
And now, under the leadership of our President and Global CEO, Hiroshi Igarashi, dentsu continues to find the uncommon path of growth and impact for clients. Scrolling Therapy: Changing Lives
In collaboration with Eurofarma, Dentsu Creative teams in Argentina, Brazil, and the USA developed Scrolling Therapy, a digital tool that enables Parkinson’s patients to control their social media feeds using facial therapy exercises. Inspired by Sebastian Porta , a dentsu colleague in Argentina diagnosed with Parkinson’s.
The birth of Scrolling Therapy lies in the pressing challenge faced by Parkinson's patients globally. With approximately 10 million people affected by Parkinson's worldwide, it stands as the fastest-growing neurological condition. Patients with Parkinson's require regular physical therapy to mitigate the progression of symptoms, yet finding the time and motivation for these exercises, particularly facial exercises, can be daunting.
Scrolling Therapy creatively addresses this challenge by harnessing facial recognition technology to merge therapeutic exercises with everyday social media interactions. By transforming essential facial therapy exercises into common social media actions, the app empowers patients to control and interact with their social feeds using only their faces. The goal? To stimulate facial muscles, enhance motor control, and improve overall brain activity, supporting comprehensive therapy for Parkinson's.
Since its launch in 2023, Scrolling Therapy has made a profound and far-reaching impact. Available for free to all Parkinson's patients worldwide, the app has been launched across 10 countries with the support of over 45,000 doctors. Thought to improve Parkinson’s symptoms within just 12 weeks of daily use.
The story of Scrolling Therapy is not just about technological innovation; it's about the meaningful difference it makes in the lives of millions. This project serves as a compelling reminder that at dentsu, our pursuit of innovation is inseparable from our commitment to creating positive, lasting impact. Through initiatives like Scrolling Therapy, we embody our promise of Innovating to Impact, transforming lives and enhancing wellbeing through creativity and technology.

My Japan Railway: Transforming Tradition
To celebrate the 150th anniversary of Japan Railway, Dentsu Inc. Tokyo crafted a campaign that transformed mundane commuting into an engaging adventure, blending tradition with modern technology to reconnect the railway with its users.
Japan Railway's extensive network is a vital part of the nation’s infrastructure, providing convenience and fostering growth for 150 years. Despite their importance, train lines are often taken for granted. To change this and boost domestic travel post-pandemic, dentsu Japan set out to create a campaign that would make train travel fun and meaningful, encouraging exploration and personal connection with Japan’s railway system.
Inspired by Japan’s long-standing tradition of collecting woodcut stamps at travel destinations, the team designed over 900 unique woodcut-style digital stamps for train stations across Japan, accessible via an app. These stamps could be collected by passengers as they travelled, turning each journey into a treasure hunt. This not only incentivized visiting more stations but also highlighted each station's unique identity and rich historical significance. The web app also allowed passengers to see how many others had collected the same stamps, fostering a sense of community among travellers.
The campaign significantly boosted interest in travel. Commuters reported increased enjoyment in train travel and a heightened desire to explore new destinations. Social media buzzed with over 24,000 mentions and 49,000,000 impressions, while media coverage in magazines and newspapers amplified the campaign's reach. With around 1,000,000 users collecting over 6,300,000 stamps, the campaign not only entertained but also strengthened the connection between Japan Railway and its passengers.
By creatively leveraging cultural traditions and modern technology, we transformed everyday commutes into memorable journeys, fostering a deeper connection between people and the railway system that serves them. This initiative not only drove growth for Japan Railway but also boosted the reputation of this longstanding brand.

The Everything Book: Democratizing Education
In rural India, the stark reality is that 80% of children lack access to quality education. While high-speed internet has the potential to revolutionize this situation, only 5% of the population currently enjoys such connectivity. Although infrastructure projects are underway to bridge this gap, their completion remains a distant prospect.
Amidst these challenges, Vedantu , India’s leading e-learning platform, approached Dentsu Creative with a mission to democratize education and connect disconnected kids to the opportunities they deserve. Our Dentsu Creative teams in India and Portugal responded with an innovative solution known as The Everything Book.
The Everything Book is a physical product that functions as an internet signal aggregator, ingeniously combining weak 2G signals in its vicinity to create a robust Hyperspot. This technological marvel enables children to access Vedantu’s comprehensive curriculum for free, overcoming the barriers of inadequate internet infrastructure. It is the brainchild of a dedicated team of educators, technologists, and artists, all driven by a common passion for enhancing educational access and quality.
Beyond its technical capabilities, The Everything Book serves as a beacon of inspiration. Each page features compelling success stories of real-life heroes hailing from backgrounds similar to the children from rural India. These stories, illustrated using traditional art forms from various regions, inspired their young minds by blending cultural heritage with modern content and technology.
To ensure this transformative tool reached those most in need, The Everything Books were distributed in villages where infrastructure, teachers, and textbooks were scarce. This initiative successfully provided an endless learning environment, making education limitless for countless children. And the impact has been profound.
Upon launch, an impressive 50,000 hours of Vedantu content were streamed through this device. As a result, 900 children have directly benefited from The Everything Book, covering over 60 rural villages across India. This innovative solution has also led to a 37% increase in class attendance, underscoring its effectiveness in engaging and retaining students.
Through The Everything Book, Dentsu Creative and Vedantu not only bridged the educational gap but also ignited a spark of hope and ambition among children. This project stands as a true testament to the power of combining creativity, technology, and an indispensable sector like, education to create a positive and lasting impact on the next generations.
