Innovative Leadership in Philanthropy: Spotlight on Caitlin Jung's Visionary Approach at Canuck Place
The nonprofit sector relies on, more than ever before, creative leadership and strategic innovation. Many organizations are vying for more than just dollars—they are vying for space in the minds of communities and supporters. In this environment, nonprofit leadership increasingly needs to prioritize evolution, sophistication, authenticity, and creativity to make an impact where it matters most.. At the heart of this transformation is Caitlin Jung, Director of Philanthropy and Corporate Partnerships, whose approach to donor engagement and philanthropy is setting new standards for excellence.
Caitlin's journey at Canuck Place is a testament to the power of strategic philanthropy fused with compassionate leadership. Caitlin steers the Major Gifts team with a focus on authenticity, innovation, and a deep understanding of the fundraising sector’s nuanced landscape. Her work is not just about championing Canuck Place’s mission, but also about setting a benchmark for meaningful donor engagement, advancing pediatric palliative care, and engaging professionals within and beyond the sector to join a movement that connects ambition with altruism.
At the core of Caitlin's strategy lies a profound recognition: behind every donation is a personal story, a unique motivation driving individuals, corporations, and foundations to make a difference.
A personal approach to philanthropy
At the heart of Caitlin's strategy is the recognition that behind every donation—whether from an individual, a corporation, or a foundation—there's a personal story and motivation to make a difference. This understanding drives the Major Gifts team to tailor their communication and engagement efforts, ensuring every donor sees the tangible impact of their contribution, from enhancing medical practices to directly improving the lives of children and families in need.
Caitlin emphasizes the importance of connecting with new and diverse communities, acknowledging that inclusivity in philanthropy isn't just a moral imperative but a critical component of Canuck Place's mission, and indeed of advancing the sector as a whole. This approach not only broadens an organization's support base but also enriches the philanthropic ecosystem with fresh perspectives and resources.
“One of our major goals is also to increase our connection to folks who might be new to the sector, and I think particularly of how important it is to reach diverse communities that have too often not been considered in charitable spaces, especially on the funder side of the table,” says Caitlin.
Balancing diverse donor expectations
Mastering the art of listening is key to Caitlin's success in balancing the varied needs and expectations of donors. By prioritizing understanding, and the essential process of discovery, and uncovering a supporter’s motivations behind their giving, , Caitlin and her team can tailor their support to match the unique desires of each donor, whether that's through detailed program reporting, marketing benefits, or customized recognition.
“We are lucky at Canuck Place to have a Major Gifts team who has experience in fundraising across a broad spectrum of donors,” Caitlin shares.
For example, there are individuals on the Major Gifts team who work primarily in corporate entities and understand how corporations integrate charitable giving into their budgets. Others are experts in community and family foundation needs, applications, and reports, in additional to experts in legacy giving.

This approach ensures that all forms of contributions are valued and impactful, fostering long-term relationships and a deep sense of community among supporters.
“Having a team working together so strongly helps us balance the large variety of donor motivations we see at Canuck Place, and ensure we are equipped to meet each need and always show the impact generosity can have,“ says Caitlin.
Adapting to a shifting fundraising landscape
The fundraising landscape is evolving, with donors increasingly seeking clarity and impact from their contributions. Caitlin's forward-thinking and adaptable leadership style has enabled her team to meet these changing expectations head-on.
“We are in the early stages of seeing a generation shift,” Caitlin explains. “We are looking ahead to ensure that we are forging relationships with emerging leaders in the community, who are also driving the culture and the expectations for their generation to engage in philanthropy and support their communities.”
By focusing on the real-world impacts of donations and building relationships with emerging community leaders, Caitlin ensures that Canuck Place remains at the forefront of philanthropic innovation, ready to meet the challenges and opportunities of the future.
Moving forward with dedication and commitment
Caitlin's love for her team and dedication to Canuck Place's mission is evident in her organizational goals. With an eye on growth to match the expanding needs of the families served and reaching more families that need Canuck Place care, Caitlin is committed to scaling the team's capabilities to meet the growing need. This includes strategic hiring, fostering a sustainable and creative work environment, and empowering team members to take the initiative on projects that spark their passion.
“We lean into creativity, giving everyone on the team a chance to try new ideas, and take ownership of initiatives they find most interesting,” says Caitlin.
