This week’s 5 top stories you can't miss:

1️⃣ [Agents] Google has unveiled an onslaught of new features, tools, and updates, including Gemini 2.0 which can “generate audio and images” (as well as text), and brings new “multimodal capabilities” that are powering its “next big thing: AI agents,” which it demonstrated via the (beta) launch of its first AI agent—Project Mariner—which can navigate the web autonomously.

  • The Gemini 2.0-powered agent can independently move the cursor and click buttons, allowing it to complete tasks like filling out forms, adding items to a shopping cart, finding flights and hotels, and surfacing recipes.
  • It’s been released to testers, who say it’s slow—taking 5 seconds between each cursor movement—and just works on active Chrome tabs, meaning users can’t do anything but watch the agent (slowly) working.
  • Google says this was intentional, so users know what the agent is doing, as was the decision to not allow it to accept cookies, sign terms of service agreements, or complete payments, giving users more control.

2️⃣[Siri] Siri is leveling up in a big way! Apple has long faced criticism for Siri’s lack of innovation, but with the launch of iOS 18, things are changing. The introduction of Apple Intelligence, powered by generative AI and seamless integration with ChatGPT, is breathing new life into Apple’s digital assistant. From smarter responses to enhanced functionality, Siri is finally catching up—and even getting ahead.

  • ChatGPT Integration: Siri can now collaborate with ChatGPT to tackle questions it couldn’t handle before. Want meal ideas with ingredients from your garden? Just ask Siri, and ChatGPT will generate creative suggestions—no ChatGPT account is required.
  • Enhanced Language Understanding: Siri now better understands natural, conversational language. Stumbling on your words? No problem. Follow-up questions? Siri remembers the context, so no need to repeat yourself.
  • Type to Siri: Whether you're in a noisy crowd or a quiet library, typing to Siri is now an option. A quick double-tap opens the feature, letting you interact discreetly.
  • Expanded Product Knowledge: Siri now knows more about Apple devices and services. Need help scheduling a text? Siri offers clear, step-by-step guidance, sparing you a trip to the settings menu.

3️⃣[Smartglasses] Smart glasses maker Solos announced its new AI spectacles, the first to fully integrate GPT-4o, are now available for purchase.

  • The AirGo Vision, which comes in a variety of frame and color options, can identify people, objects, and text through their camera, unlocking some sci-fi-like capabilities
  • You’ll be able to translate text, get directions, or ask things like “Tell me about this monument”
  • At $299, they’re priced identically to Meta’s offering
  • Because they have an open architecture, you’ll also be able to access Claude and Gemini with them
  • Solos is riding the augmented reality wave, with AR hardware usage expected to double this year alone

4️⃣ [Editor] ChatGPT gets more collaborative and intuitive: OpenAI is opening up its Canvas feature — sort of like an AI-powered word processor — to all ChatGPT users:

  • It offers inline suggestions and feedback for precision edits, the ability to adjust document length to be shorter or longer, and options to modify the reading level—ranging from Kindergarten simplicity to Graduate School sophistication.
  • For a polished final touch, it checks grammar, clarity, and consistency. And if you're looking to add some flair, it even sprinkles in relevant emojis to emphasize key points and add a splash of color.
  • Finally, Canvas can now run Python code, spotting bugs and errors for you

5️⃣ [Quantum] Putting Alphabet’s quantum breakthrough into perspective: Researchers are still reeling from the news that Alphabet’s quantum chip just accomplished a computing challenge that would have taken ordinary supercomputers longer than the age of the universe to solve.

  • It did so while keeping errors to a minimum — a feat that had eluded scientists for 30 years
  • Try to wrap your head around this one: The company says the calculations happened so fast they might have taken place in parallel universes, “in line with the idea that we live in a multiverse” — although some physicists pushed back on that theory
  • The next challenge will be to use the computer for real-world tasks
