International Baccalaureate Career-related Programme officially recognized in India and Malaysia for tertiary education

Today marks a significant milestone for the International Baccalaureate’s (IB) Career-related Programme (CP) in the Asia-Pacific region. The CP has achieved equivalency in India and Malaysia, meaning that CP students in-country and any Indian or Malaysian nationals returning to country for tertiary education, will be recognized by universities as holding equivalent qualifications.

In Malaysia, the CP has been officially recognized by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) for equivalency for the admission of students to undergraduate programmes in public and private universities. The MQA provides equivalency accreditation for entry qualifications (Level 6 MQF - bachelor’s degree) to universities; specific entry requirements will continue to be at the discretion of individual universities.

In India, the CP will be recognized as equivalent to Indian School Boards, such as CISCE or CBSE. For equivalence to be recognized in India, CP students who have followed art, science, commerce or law strands, the following applies:

  • Studied two DP subjects with at least one at Higher Level, scoring a minimum of 3 in each DP subject
  • The career-related study included at least three subjects/modules
  • The CP core was awarded

For CP students who have followed an engineering or medicine strand, the following applies:

  • Studied three DP subjects (mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology or similar) with at least one at Higher Level, scoring a minimum of 3 in each DP subject
  • The career-related study included at least three subjects/modules
  • The CP core was awarded

Thanks to its andragogical teaching approach and future-ready focus, almost 300 IB World Schools across the globe now offer the CP. The CP’s unique educational framework blends workplace skills development with both academic and vocational qualifications. An innovative approach to upper-secondary education, the CP makes it possible for learners, aged 16-19 years, to leverage the connections that exist between different types of qualifications to better prepare them for life beyond school.

Sharing many of the benefits of the well-established and highly regarded Diploma Programme (DP), the CP comprises a three-part framework: the study of at least two DP courses, alongside the distinctive CP core and a career-related study. The CP core includes four components which support young people to develop the transferable behaviours and aptitudes they need to become lifelong learners and workplace ready: personal and professional skills, service learning, language development and the reflective project.

Stefanie Leong, Head of Development and Recognition, Asia-Pacific, said: “This is a substantial achievement which has been a focus for the Development Team for over three years. We know that universities value CP students, thanks to their deep general knowledge and enthusiasm for learning, as well as their preparedness for undertaking research. The equivalency will benefit many students who want to pursue further education in India and Malaysia.

“CP students from across the Asia-Pacific region go on to study at universities such as Griffith University, Australia and the National University of the Arts Taiwan and now, the equivalencies will mean more students in country and returning to country, will have the opportunity to have their hard work as part of the CP recognized and go to exceptional universities in India and Malaysia.”

These latest recognition policies add to those from the Inter Board Committee of Chairmen (IBCC), Ministry of Education in Pakistan and UK NARIC.
