International Experience Canada (IEC) Pool for 2025: Now Open

Are you considering moving to Canada for work? The International Experience Canada (IEC) program is now accepting profiles for the 2025 season.

The IEC program provides an excellent opportunity for eligible youth from partner countries to gain Canadian work experience and potentially build a pathway to permanent residence.

What is the International Experience Canada (IEC) Program?

The IEC program allows young people from certain countries to work in Canada under specific categories of work permits. Unlike many other work permit programs, the IEC offers participants greater certainty about their chances of approval.

Benefits of the IEC Program

  • Work Experience: Gain valuable Canadian work experience, which can help build eligibility for permanent residence.
  • Pathways to PR: Work experience on an IEC permit can qualify applicants for the Canadian Experience Class (CEC), a key pathway under the Express Entry system. Canadian work experience also boosts an applicant’s Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score, increasing their chances of receiving an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence.

What is the International Experience Canada (IEC) Program?

The International Experience Canada (IEC) program is a temporary residence program that provides work permits for eligible youth from certain partner countries.

Purpose of the IEC

The program is part of Canada’s bilateral youth mobility agreements with other countries. These agreements facilitate pathways for youth from partner countries to temporarily live and work in Canada. In return, Canadian youth receive similar opportunities to live and work in partner countries.

IEC Categories

Eligible youth can apply for Canadian work permits under one of the following three categories:

  1. Working Holiday Category: Provides an open work permit, allowing participants to work for any employer in Canada. Ideal for those looking to fund their travels in Canada through temporary work.
  2. Young Professionals Category: Provides an employer-specific work permit for individuals with a job offer in Canada. Focuses on helping participants gain professional work experience related to their field of study or career.
  3. International Co-op Category: Provides an employer-specific work permit for students seeking an internship or co-op placement in Canada as part of their studies.

Through these categories, the IEC program promotes cultural exchange and professional development while supporting Canada's economic and labor market needs.

Employer-Specific vs. Open Work Permits in Canada

Canada offers two primary types of work permits under its immigration programs: Employer-Specific Work Permits and Open Work Permits (OWPs). Here's how they differ:

Employer-Specific Work Permits

  • Restrictions: Tied to a single employer, limiting where the holder can work in Canada. Specifies the employer’s name, location, occupation, and the duration of employment.
  • Changing Employers: Permit holders can apply to change their employer, but this requires submitting all necessary documentation. Approval of such requests is at the discretion of the reviewing immigration officer.

Open Work Permits (OWPs)

  • Flexibility: Not tied to any specific employer. Allow holders to work for most employers in most industries across Canada.
  • Freedom to Work: Provide a much greater degree of mobility compared to employer-specific permits.

Both types of permits serve different purposes and are tailored to meet varying needs of Canada’s labor market and immigration objectives. Employer-specific work permits are ideal for job-specific roles, while open work permits offer greater flexibility for workers seeking diverse opportunities in Canada.
