International Women’s Day: Writing Tomorrow’s History Books Today

From trailblazers in science and technology, to leaders in politics and business, to activists fighting for equality and justice, women have played an unmistakable part in shaping our world.

As we celebrate International Women's Day on March 8, it is important to reflect on the incredible contributions women have made throughout history and continue to make today.

From my perspective, women have amazing opportunities to keep making big marks on history!

The paths ahead of us are filled with purpose. The world needs women with technical skills and the right mix of interpersonal, project management, and critical thinking skills—across geography and business sectors—to meet that purpose.

Health tech, green tech, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and data science are a few examples that come to mind. There are many opportunities for women to make a big splash in their initial careers, second careers, or with new technology skills and certifications.

Women of all ages and backgrounds have a role to play in writing tomorrow’s history books, starting today.

I’m very proud to say that at SAP we have a diverse and talented team of women who are helping to set new standards of excellence in the industry. In 2022, we achieved our goal of 35% women in the SAP workforce, and we are all better for it. I’m looking forward to setting new goals as we look toward 2030.

At the same time, globally, we need to recognize the career ladder is still shaky for women in tech. Did you know, for example, that the share of women in the workforce is lowest in the tech roles that are growing the fastest, according to a recent report from McKinsey?

It is up to all of us to sponsor, mentor, and cheer for girls and women of all ages and backgrounds to pursue tech skills.

Our goals for including women need to be bold.

On International Women’s Day, let’s honor the achievements of women past and present. Let’s envision the full potential of women in technology and commit to creating a more equitable and inclusive tomorrow for all.

Join SAP’s International Women’s Day virtual event, DigitALL: Innovation and Technology for Gender Equality, on March 8.
