This week, we are sharing key resources following our collaboration launch with Orca AI, as part of the Get SET! Safety & Efficiency Technologies presented by NorthStandard.
We also keep you informed of the latest shipping industry news, insights and news from NorthStandard including recent events activity from #ournorthstandardpeople including highlights from CMA Shipping , America’s leading expo and conference for the maritime industry.
Firstly, we would like to share a personal message from all of us here at NorthStandard.
We were incredibly saddened to hear the news that our Board Member and former Chair of The Standard Club, Ricardo Menendez Ross, passed away earlier this week following an unexpected illness.
Ricardo had been part of the Standard Club and NorthStandard family for over 30 years. He joined The Standard Club board in 1990, was Chair from September 2003 until January 2014, and joined the NorthStandard Board in February 2023.
Ricardo was a well-known and respected figure in international shipping, representing companies such as Interocean Transport Inc, Shipping Services Argentina SA, Naviera del Sud and Navalia SA. You can read more about Ricardo and his contribution to the marine industry here >.
Our thoughts and condolences are with Ricardo’s friends and family at this time.
Welcome to Orca AI
Watch to understand more about how the AI based maritime navigation assistant helps to ensure that vessels can reach their destinations safely and efficiently, regardless of weather conditions or vessel congestion.
Get SET! to navigate safely and efficiently with Orca AI Resources
As part of our ongoing commitment to delivering exceptional service and bringing cutting-edge technologies to the maritime market, we have chosen to collaborate with Orca AI, a groundbreaking AI and Computer Vision expert for the maritime industry – part of the Get SET! Safety & Efficiency Technologies presented by NorthStandard.
The Orca AI platform acts as a fully automated watchkeeper ensuring that vessels can safely navigate through challenging weather conditions and vessel congestion with limited visibility. In addition, Orca AI provides those on shore with unprecedented visibility into fleet operations, allowing shipowners and operations leaders to identify safety gaps and trends that require action.

The Vehicle Carrier Safety Forum (VCSF) publishes its first industry good practice guidelines entitled ‘Common Guidance on the loading and presentation of vehicles’.
The guidance, and supporting checklist, are intended to reduce the risks associated with the shipment of unaccompanied vehicles, including electric and hybrid vehicles, and to promote the safety of terminal and vessel personnel and the protection of property including the vessel itself.
The Vehicle Carrier Safety Forum is a consortium of vessel operators, insurers and other industry experts, whose role is to promote safety on vessels designed to carry vehicles. The guidance is supported by industry bodies The International Group of P&I Clubs, The International Chamber of Shipping and the TT Club.
The guidelines are intended to be used in conjunction with specific procedures from individual vehicle manufacturers, shippers, terminals or carriers in respect of information such as vehicle separation on board the vessel or emergency response.
GCMD releases report on “Concept study to offload onboard captured CO₂”
Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation (GCMD), in collaboration with Lloyd’s Register and ARUP, publishes findings on offloading captured carbon dioxide from vessels.
The study aims to address a gap in the onboard carbon capture value chain. OCCS (Onboard Carbon Capture and Storage) has recently gained traction as a potential interim solution to help international shipping meet IMO’s emissions reduction targets, with potential deliberations at future Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) sessions.
Some of their key findings include:

E-Bills of Lading by guest author Konstantinos Grigoriadis - Claims Executive – Greece at NorthStandard
The issuance of electronic Bills of Lading (E-Bs/L) has been possible for more than 20 years, although the legal framework for E-Bs/L around the world has been slow to catch up.
However lately a number of countries have started legally recognising the status of E-Bs/L and given their increasing usage, it is important that correspondents keep up-to-date with developments, especially in their local jurisdictions. We would encourage correspondents to keep the Club updated on any changes and provide guidance where necessary on their usage.
For example, Singapore enacted the Electronic Transactions (Amendment) Act in 2021, creating legislation that recognises electronic equivalents of transferable documents including bills of lading, promissory notes and bills of exchange. Another example is Spain which has adopted a similar framework under the Maritime Navigation Act 2014. More recently the Electronic Trade Documents Act 2023 came into force in September and gives legal recognition in English law to electronic trade documents, including E-Bs/L, provided certain gateway criteria are met.
Last week our colleagues Mike Salthouse, Head of External Affairs, and Helen Barden, Senior Solicitor – External Affairs, attended CMA Shipping
As North America’s leading expo and conference for the maritime industry, the event was a great success with Mike taking part in a panel discussion on the impact of sanctions and security concerns in the maritime industry, while Helen also discussed on a panel the CII (Carbon Intensity Indicator) regulation enforcement. Helen commented;
🗨 It was my first CMA and I found it a great opportunity to see people from all aspects of the shipping industry and discuss with them the key challenges facing the industry, as well as the opportunities. Everyone is there because they are passionate about shipping and want to contribute to make the industry great, which is really energising! 🗨
