It's FINALLY Over — And Oh The Lessons We Can Learn...
Sometimes in life you need to make sacrifices for the things you love. My sacrifice the past couple months has been a seat on the couch next to my girlfriend as I despairingly watched 31 men compete to fall in love with a woman whom they have known for 6 weeks. Last night, America sat on the edge their seats watching the Finale wondering if it would be Peter or Bryan. I didn't. I watched the most colossal example of someone shamelessly and publicly SETTLING on national television in front of millions of people. Because of this, I couldn't help but make a connection to life and business.
If you didn't watch the show and accidentally stumbled into this article you probably won't understand the context of the below. If you did watch the show, let's learn some life lessons...
1 — DON'T RUSH THE BIG DECISIONS — This stems from my distain for the entire idea of the Bachelor/Bachelorette in general. Two people making one of the biggest decisions of their lives together after 6 weeks, 2 group dates, 3 one on ones, and an overnight in the Fantasy Suite just seems unrealistic. But, I'm no love expert and what Rachel and Bryan choose to do is really none of my business. However, I do know this. Of all the decisions we make in our lives, there are definitely a certain few of them that are BIG decisions that can drastically change the trajectory of your life. Those are the decisions you can’t afford to mess up! You know what those decisions are in your personal life, but I challenge you to stop and think about what they are in your professional life. They can often sneak up on you and can be hidden in plain sight. Be prepared for them and be patient on what you decide when they are on your plate.
2 — NEVER EVER BE DESPARATE – I about lost it when the newlyweds were asked what they were going to do now that the show is over and they responded with, “Get to know each other.” It became clear to me by Episode 10 that Rachel was soooo desperate for a ring and husband that I don’t even think the person she was going to choose mattered. I mean, she turned down a guy that every girl in America would die for simply because he had an ounce of sense about him to tell her that 6 weeks just wasn’t enough time for him to propose to her. You see, her desperation clouded her judgement – a situation you NEVER EVER want to be in. The root of desperation is poor expectation. When you set unrealistic expectations for yourself in any given situation of your professional career, you begin to enslave yourself to the desperation of making it happen. If you find yourself doing bad deals just to hit numbers knowing that it is a bad move for your business, STOP! If you find yourself working for a boss or company you hate simply because you feel like you NEED that paycheck every Friday, STOP! You are likely acting out of desperation and somewhere along the way your expectations weren’t properly set. Being desperate will send you back to point #1 and wrong life decisions will be made by mistake.
3 – DON’T SETTLE – Rachel was desperate to be married more than clear minded on choosing the best person to spend the rest of her life with. Because of this she had to settle for the next best person who would meet her unrealistic expectation. Settling is nothing more than the outcome of the two points above. Poor Decisions + Desperation = Settling. Don’t do it! Analyze yourself. Are there areas of your life or career that you are unhappy with? Reverse engineer it – you likely settled for something along the way that you shouldn’t have. It’s never too late to fix it. You can accomplish anything in the world you are willing to work for. Don’t settle for anything less.
4 —BE 100 – You all know what I’m talking about. As annoyed as I was every single time I had to hear Rachel tell people that “She’s 100,” it’s probably the only thing I agree with her on. Matter of fact, if I was asked to give just one piece of advice to anyone on this earth it would be to BE 100! What she and I mean by this is be all in, be 100%, dive in the pool, go big, leave nothing behind, have no regrets! Nobody I know who is any good at what they do got there by giving less than EVERYTHING effort. If it’s an absolute grind and exhaustion for you to even think about giving 100% in what you are doing then you might want to think about if you what you are doing is the right thing. You have one life to live and I have a feeling that the retirement home is full of people who would tell us to live our lives with one goal in mind – when you're on your death bed, be there with 0 regrets!
Thank you Rachel for the life lessons. Now, can I have my Mondays back???
