It's a mission to make food fair

This week, we share a new blog from our CEO Sue Pritchard on why making food fair is central to Labour's missions – plus a new film for #TheFoodConversation exploring what citizens in Wales want from food.

As the Prime Minister and his Cabinet start to set the tone for how they will govern and what they will govern on, our Chief Executive Sue Pritchard sets out why this mission-led government should prioritise action on food for a fairer, more prosperous country.

While the bills in the Kings Speech to tackle junk food advertising and highly caffeinated energy drinks are a start, it is important that politicians start seeing food as a system - "a web of connected and interdependent features that must be understood and tackled as a whole, to get the outcomes we need, while not creating unintended or unforeseen consequences" - just as citizens in #TheFoodConversation do.

Such a large majority, Sue points out, should "embolden government to press on with the policy plans that might otherwise have been politically contested... Citizens want greener, healthier, fairer food and farming. And they expect government to step up and act."

All eyes on Labour as they navigate their first 100 days in power.

What do citizens in Wales think about food?

Last week, we hosted a roundtable at the Royal Welsh Agricultural Show to share early insights from the Wales phase of The Food Conversation. It was a real opportunity for decision-makers, including Derek Walker from the The Office of the Future Generations Commissioner for Wales and other influential figures from NFU Cymru, Farmers' Union of Wales and other charities and NGOs more to find out what people in Wales really want from food.

We also launched our new film at the event, which hears from people living and working in Wales as tell us who they think should lead change, and what needs to happen to make food work better, now and for the generations to come.

Organisations, communities and citizens across the UK are now hosting their own Food Conversations to find out what people in their local area really want from food.
