Job Search during January

So, we are in 2023 now! I must say, 2022 was a wild ride… I hope you found time for yourself and the people you love during the holidays and are ready for a fresh start. Traditionally, January brings us increasing employee turnover tends, and there are many reasons for that:

🔘 it’s time when most organizations ramp up hiring

🔘 some people wait for their year-end bonuses before leaving

🔘 many want to enjoy the holidays before starting their new job search

🔘 some use the new year to reinvent themselves with a new role

Are you one of them? If so, make sure you are well informed about the sector, company, and current job market trends before you make any decision.

In this newsletter, we will talk about how to get a clear sense of career direction, what to do if you want a promotion this year, and how to make your job search as efficient as possible.

Work on your career clarity

Before doing anything, check if you have clear answers to the following questions:

  • What are my professional goals in the short and long term?
  • What do I enjoy about my current position, and what are the potential opportunities in my new career path?
  • What factors have influenced my decision to explore a different career path?
  • What do I want out of my next job?

How to work efficiently on your promotion and get it

So, you are ready for a career jump? Is it time for you to get promoted to a more senior executive or VP position within your company?

Transitioning to the next level might seem like a natural next career step to you, but you still need to have what it takes for it. Here are 2 most important things you need to do to be considered:

You need to prove you are leadership material:

🟢 Can you demonstrate a deep understanding of your company’s goals? Are you clearly an expert on industry trends as a whole? If you are not there yet, consider further training, coaching, or obtaining the external certifications you need.

🟢 You also need to show you are a stronger choice over external candidates - you believe you should be their first choice, given your institutional knowledge and performance history, right? But your company leadership might think the outsider’s perspective and fresh ideas would be a better choice. Here is how to stand out:

  •  Showing you fully understand the company’s core values and demonstrating them professionally or personally is where your competitive advantage lies.
  • How can you challenge your company to progress? The answer to this question can be another of your advantages.

An efficient job search – what is that?

For your job search strategy to work, you need to be really focused on what you want from your career, and how to get it. The most important thing is a good start - always, and I mean always, TARGET specific jobs or companies, and do the necessary research about them first. Then, network and CONNECT with people from those target companies or from the industry you want to break into. Also, take good care of your ONLINE APPEARANCE (LinkedIn) and activities (posts, comments).

If your resume and LinkedIn profile are not aligned with the job you want to get, there are slim chances that you will end your job search successfully fast. Seeking professional assistance from people with HR and recruiting backgrounds might be a good idea, too.

The biggest job search problems for senior professionals and executives

Times have changed. The job search process is not as it used to be 5 years ago. Almost all clients I worked with in the last 6 months have this in common:

➡️ They held several jobs throughout their career, working their way up, some of them worked at the same company for 10-20 years.

➡️ Many didn't have to interview at all before, they got jobs and promotions through their network alone.

➡️ The last time they updated their resumes was over 5 years ago.

➡️ They were all surprised at how unprepared they were for the current job market.

In 2023, the people you'll be competing with for your desired position will come from many different paths, and the competition will be fierce.

Here are some common job search problems (you might be experiencing right now) and tips on how to address them:
