Growing up I did a lot of different things for work and ultimately none of it really prepared me with any real high value skills and this was a real problem. I spent three months with my best friend, he's Tai-American and he's in Bangkok. There's this one time that we're eating dinner. We used to philosophize and talk psychology all the time because that's just our natural mindset He told me, he said, “you know. you're a sharp guy but you're useless you don't have any skills.” That was the real rude awakening for me. I actually thank them for the harsh criticisms. I went home and I got back to work. So when I came back I was on fire and I decided that I'm going to get my degree my PhD in psychology because this is what I'm good at. So, I became a research assistant at Stanford and I worked there for six months before things changed.
It was the end of 2014 that a friend of mine was starting an online marketing consulting business. He told me about this business model. He told me how you can sell people on money retainers you can charge fifteen hundred two thousand dollars per month. You have to be good at what you do, but it's a very scalable model, and you can work with other professionals who already know what they're doing. Before meeting Josh Harris I was dealing with a lot of pain getting my business started. I was targeting all these different companies, I wasn't specializing in anything. I was trying, reaching out to all of them, trying to get clients and it just wasn't working. At one point I actually had negative 76 dollars in my bank account. I happen to be part of an online marketing community and when I met Josh, he coached me on what I was doing wrong.
Josh worked with me and taught me how to pick my niche, work on my message, how to add more value, and even charge more. I picked the niche of solar and I didn't have direct experience with it, but I understood the business, the consumer model that they presented, and that's what I went with. Because I would actually get quite nervous before calls. That was a big one. Sometimes I feel quite incapacitated, I couldn't eat, I couldn't even drink enough. I would just power through it and get it done. Sometimes I blew it, sometimes my calls were terrible, but after a while I got really good at what I did. One of the biggest things that I've, that I continue to receive from working with Josh, is mindset. The thing about Josh is he leads with massive action and he just gets things done. There's nothing in his way and he's able to point out the mindset blocks that you present with within yourself that are stopping you from taking the actions. You Instinctively know you need to take. You need to stop thinking so much and act.
Within a month and a half Josh helped me to get my first client and then within another four and a half months I had attained six. So, that's zero to six clients. You can imagine a $1,500 retainer month after month. It immediately created a six-figure consulting business. It took less than six months to get to the six-figure consulting business and things just continue to grow. Now I get to work from home. I get to make my own hours. I have the financial freedom to pursue the things that I want. I've gone on vacations. I've gone to Maui two times already in this last year. A year and a half ago I made a goal to reach a million within five years. I have three point five years left, but working with Josh I think I'm going to get there well before. If you are determined to run a successful consulting business then you need mentors who have had success doing exactly what you want to do. If I had this information three, five, or ten years ago, it's hard for me to imagine where I would be. I know that if I would have found my purpose earlier and I would have had a much faster head start.
