This Journaling Thing – What’s It All About?

If you’ve ever heard people talk about journaling and thought, “What’s the big deal?” or “What’s this journaling thing really all about?” you’re not alone! Today's newsletter is a short dive into the essence of journaling—why so many people swear by it, what it can offer you, and how it’s not just about scribbling down random thoughts but about creating something meaningful.

Why Journaling?

Journaling isn’t just writing; it’s a way of connecting with yourself. At its core, journaling is about self-reflection, understanding, and growth. You don’t have to be a writer to benefit from it. In fact, some of the most powerful moments in journaling come from raw, unfiltered thoughts that flow onto the page.

But why do people journal? Here are a few reasons:

  1. Emotional Release: When emotions feel bottled up or overwhelming, writing them down can offer relief. Putting feelings on paper helps to process them in a way that speaking or thinking often can’t.
  2. Clarity and Focus: When your mind feels like a tangled web of thoughts, journaling helps you untangle it. Writing things down forces you to slow down and think clearly.
  3. Self-Discovery: Journaling allows you to understand yourself better—your goals, fears, desires, and dreams. It’s like having a conversation with yourself where no one else can interrupt.

What Journaling Isn’t About

It’s easy to think journaling is just about what to write, but here’s the truth: Journaling isn’t about ‘what do I write,’ it’s about what you want to create. As I often say, “It’s about calling in a new identity, shifting beliefs, and letting go of everything that holds you back and doesn’t support you. It’s about releasing the old and calling in the new.”

Journaling is a tool for creating change in your life, whether that’s through reframing your thoughts, setting goals, or even just venting frustrations. You’re literally creating your future, page by page, by capturing your thoughts and intentions.

The Healing Power of Journaling

Now, let’s touch on something you might not expect—journaling can actually be good for your health. Research from Dr. James Pennebaker, a psychologist and researcher, has shown that expressive writing—particularly about emotional experiences—can improve mental and physical health.

Dr. Pennebaker’s studies found that writing about emotional challenges for just 15 to 20 minutes a day over a few days can lead to significant benefits. It can boost your immune system, improve your mood, and even reduce stress levels. It turns out that when you express your deepest feelings on paper, you’re not only helping your mind heal but also your body.

How to Start Journaling (Without Overthinking It)

If you’re thinking, “This all sounds great, but I’m not sure where to begin,” don’t worry—you’re not alone. The beauty of journaling is that there are no rules! Here are a few tips to help you start without overthinking the process:

  1. Keep It Simple: Start with just a few minutes each day. Don’t feel pressured to write pages and pages. Even writing a few sentences can be enough to make a difference.
  2. Use Prompts: If you’re not sure what to write, start with simple prompts like:
  3. Let Go of Perfection: Your journal isn’t a masterpiece. It’s not for anyone else but you. Let go of any need to write perfectly or have beautifully formed thoughts—just let it flow.
  4. Be Honest: Your journal is a safe space, so don’t censor yourself. Write how you truly feel, even if it’s messy or uncomfortable. The more real you are, the more valuable the journaling process will be.
