2. Power BI Notable Links – Tips & Tricks

Here are the top ten Power BI tips and tricks. #powerbi

1.   Develop a Data Management Strategy: Before diving into Power BI, it's important to have a clear understanding of the data you'll be working with. This includes knowing where the data is coming from, how it will be cleaned, and how it will be updated. Having a well-defined data management strategy can help ensure your Power BI reports are accurate and reliable.

2.   Use Naming Conventions: Consistency in naming items such as tables, columns, measures, and reports makes it easier for others to understand and use your Power BI assets. Stick to a clear, descriptive naming convention to facilitate this understanding.

3.   Leverage Power Query for Data Transformation: Power Query is a powerful tool that allows you to clean, reshape, and combine your data before loading it into Power BI. This can greatly improve performance and make your reports easier to manage.

4.   Keep Data Model Simple: Avoid creating a complex data model with many-to-many relationships or bi-directional relationships if you can. Instead, aim for a star or snowflake schema that keeps things simple and improves performance.

5.   Optimize DAX Calculations: DAX (Data Analysis Expressions) is a powerful language for creating custom calculations in Power BI. However, complex DAX calculations can slow down your reports. Whenever possible, use calculated columns and measures only when needed and ensure your DAX formulas are optimized.

6.   Utilize the Right Visualization: Power BI offers a wide range of visualizations, but not all are suited for every scenario. Understanding the strengths and weaknesses of each type and choosing the most effective one to represent your data can greatly improve your reports' effectiveness.

7.   Follow Good Design Principles: While Power BI is a data analysis tool, aesthetics also matter. Following good design principles like maintaining consistency, proper alignment, meaningful color usage, and sensible layout can make your reports more attractive and easier to understand.

8.   Create a User-friendly Interface: Reports should be intuitive and easy to navigate. Consider including slicers, tooltips, and drill-through options to help users interact with your data. Also, use titles, labels, and legends to make it clear what each visualization represents.

9.   Security and Sharing: Always consider who needs access to the reports and what data they should see. Power BI has built-in features for row-level security that let you control data access at a granular level. Also, when sharing reports, ensure they are shared with the correct individuals or groups to prevent unauthorized access.

10.  Constant Maintenance and Updates: Keep your reports updated and in line with the business needs. Regularly check for data updates, rectify any errors, and modify the report as per changing business requirements. A stale or inaccurate report is as good as not having a report at all.

Here are the top five Power BI report design mistakes you should avoid. #powerbi

1.   Overloading visuals with data: One of the most common mistakes in report design is overloading visuals with too much data. This can make your report difficult to read and understand, and it can also slow down performance. To avoid this, you should focus on presenting only the most important data and use filters to allow users to explore more detailed information if needed.

2.   Ignoring the user experience: Your report should be designed with the user in mind. Consider who will be using the report, how they will be using it, and what they need to get out of it. Design the report to be intuitive and easy to navigate, with clear labeling and logical grouping of information.

3.   Not using visuals effectively: Power BI offers a wide range of visual options, but it's important to choose the right one for the data you're presenting. Avoid using too many different types of visuals in a report, and make sure the visuals you choose are appropriate for the data being displayed.

4.   Failing to format visuals consistently: Consistent formatting is essential for creating a polished report. Make sure all visuals are formatted in the same way, with consistent colors, fonts, and styles. This will help to create a cohesive look and make the report easier to read.

5.   Ignoring data quality issues: Poor data quality can lead to inaccurate insights and incorrect conclusions. It's important to identify and resolve any data quality issues before creating a report. This includes removing duplicates, fixing errors, and ensuring that data is properly formatted and labeled.

8. Power BI Notable Links - Certification Info

Updated monthly, here’s the best place to go for Microsoft certifications. www.aka.ms/TrainCertPoster. From here, you can click through directly to Microsoft Learn and everything you wanted to know about certifications is listed here. On the poster itself, you can click on individual role-based certs to go directly to the certification page.

There are lots of ways to prepare for a Microsoft certification and one way that is VERY COMMON and RECOMMENDED is to go through all the Microsoft Learn content on the certification page. Regardless of your skill level, you absolutely need to master the content there so if you are already well versed in Power BI, you can probably rapidly review. If you are new, this is the place to start! #powerbi

9. Power BI Notable Links - Books

Spending only 30 minutes a day learning a single concept, formula, or method is equivalent to 182.5 hours/year. How much can you learn in 182 hours? What if you went all in and turned off the TV and spent 4 hours/day? That’s 1,460 hours/year!!! Adults learn by doing and many of these books come with complete downloads of example content that is directly covered in the book, so you are not just reading the book and looking at figures and images, you are in Power BI at the same time reviewing the examples and content printed in the book. In addition, the frequency of daily small lessons (or big gulps hahaha) significantly increases your retention factor. None of these links are affiliate or advertisements. I own many of these in my private library and they are highly recommended.  #powerbi

Do you have a great book to recommend? Let me know here.
