KPI 101: Measuring What Matters for Business Growth

When it comes to business growth, it’s not just about “doing more” but about knowing where to put your focus. That’s where Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) come in. KPIs give you measurable insights into the health of your business, allowing you to make decisions with confidence and clarity.

What Are KPIs?

Simply put, KPIs are metrics that reflect your business’s performance in key areas. They’re designed to help you understand if you’re on track to meet your goals and pinpoint areas needing improvement. Unlike general data, KPIs are specific, actionable, and aligned with your growth objectives.

Think of KPIs as your business’s “vital signs”—keeping tabs on them regularly allows you to measure growth, efficiency, and overall success.

Why KPIs Are Essential for Growth

When you set the right KPIs, you’re not just gathering data; you’re creating a roadmap to scale with precision. Here’s why KPIs are non-negotiable for businesses aiming to grow:

  • Clarity and Focus: KPIs keep your team and resources aligned with what truly matters, so you’re not wasting time on unimportant metrics.
  • Informed Decision-Making: With KPIs, you get clear data that takes the guesswork out of strategy, allowing you to make decisions based on evidence.
  • Continuous Improvement: Regularly tracking KPIs gives you early insight into what’s working and what’s not, helping you adjust before small issues become bigger problems.

Setting Up KPIs That Matter

It’s easy to get overwhelmed by metrics, but the key is to focus on what matters for your business goals. Here’s how to set up effective KPIs:

  1. Define Your Business Goals: Start with your top objectives. Are you aiming to increase revenue, improve customer satisfaction, or streamline operations? Your KPIs should reflect these goals directly.
  2. Choose Relevant Metrics: Only track metrics that impact your goals. If your focus is on revenue, a relevant KPI might be “monthly sales growth.” For customer satisfaction, “Net Promoter Score (NPS)” is often a powerful KPI.
  3. Make KPIs Specific and Measurable: Vague metrics won’t provide actionable insights. Each KPI should have a clear target, such as “increase monthly sales by 10%” or “reduce customer wait time to under 3 minutes.”
  4. Regularly Review and Adjust: KPIs should be adaptable. As your business grows, so should your metrics. Regularly review your KPIs to make sure they continue to align with your evolving goals.

Kimberly Laverdure, The Virtual Life Alchemist KPIs reminde me of Home Shopping Network, where the most important Key Performing Metric was DPM - Dollars Per Minute. How many $$ per minute was the netwok selling at. And if a guest didn't hit their numbers, their future shows were cancelled. But I had no idea that it’s not just about “doing more” but about knowing where to put your focus. Intuitively, I got it, but there was not a conscious purposeful understanding of this premise. Was I cognitively aware of it in the early days of my business, I would be much further along. Like I've been saying all along, Kimberly - where were you when I needed you. The good news is, you are here now...best, Kellie

Great article, Kimberly Laverdure, The Virtual Life Alchemist! There are a lot of organizations, especially in the non-profit world who don't do this, because they don't think it's possible as they are mission-driven vs. profit driven.
