Ladies, Look After Your Progesterone Levels!

Ladies, Look After Your Progesterone Levels!

Dear readers,

If, as a woman, you are facing

  • extremely short, long, or missed periods
  • an irregular/inconsistent menstrual cycle
  • severe PMS symptoms, including mood swings, bloating, and breast tenderness.
  • infertility
  • miscarriages
  • increased anxiety, depression, or irritability.
  • persistent tiredness or low energy.
  • insomnia or poor-quality sleep.
  • weight gain particularly around the midsection.
  • hot slashes and night sweats

You most likely have low progesterone levels!

What is progesterone anyway?

Progesterone is a steroid hormone and the main female hormone.

Nope, it's not estrogen.

Progesterone is synthesized in the ovaries, adrenal glands, and during pregnancy, in the placenta. The synthesis of progesterone follows a well-defined pathway:

Cholesterol

The process begins with cholesterol, which is converted into pregnenolone in the mitochondria of cells.

Pregnenolone

Pregnenolone is then converted into progesterone by an enzyme {3β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (3β-HSD).}

Why is progesterone important?

Apart from being a vital hormone required for overall balance of health in the body, progesterone's most unique functions are

  • Menstrual Cycle Regulation: Preparing the endometrium for potential pregnancy after ovulation and regulates the menstrual cycle.
  • Pregnancy Support: Maintaining the uterine lining for a fertilized egg to implant and supports early pregnancy.
  • Mood Regulation: It has a calming effect on the brain and can help alleviate symptoms of PMS and menopause.
  • Bone Health: Progesterone plays a role in maintaining bone density.

Your progesterone levels

typical progesterone levels (measured in ng/mL) can vary based on the phase of the menstrual cycle, your health practitioner needs to have these numbers in order to make sound decisions. The tentative range is as follows:

  • Follicular Phase: 0.1-0.7 ng/mL
  • Luteal Phase: 2-25 ng/mL
  • Post-Menopausal: 0.1-0.8 ng/mL
  • Pregnancy: Levels can range from 10-290 ng/mL, depending on the trimester.

Simultaneously, these levels can vary widely, and what’s normal for one woman may not be for another.

Some Holistic Ways to Maintain Healthy Progesterone Levels

  1. Focus on a diet rich in whole foods, consume yam, and healthy saturated fats for healthy cholesterol levels.
  2. Contrary to what you have been told, regular physical activity, including strength training and cardio exercises, balances your hormones, so get moving!
  3. Practice mindfulness, meditation, and yoga to reduce stress and cortisol levels, which can impact progesterone.
  4. Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night to support hormone production. Increase this number to 10 during your periods.
  5. Reduce exposure to chemicals found in plastics, personal care products, and pesticides, all phthalates and endocrine disrupting chemicals (including oral contraceptives, yes) to improve your cycle health.
  6. Consider herbs like chasteberry (vitex), which can support progesterone levels naturally, but not without consulting a specialist!
  7. Maintain a healthy body weight through diet and exercise, as excess body fat can lead to hormonal imbalances.

To confirm that your progesterone levels are healthy:

  • Get FREQUENT blood tests to monitor progesterone levels, especially if you have symptoms of imbalance.
  • Keep a journal of symptoms and note any improvements.
  • Work with a healthcare provider to track progress and adjust strategies as needed.
