Lead Without A Title

Lead Without A Title

The Leader Who Had No Title by Robin Sharma is one of my favourite books. It’s about how people from all walks of life can do great things regardless of their position in a company. It’s a book that empowers and makes you want to do better.

With snow causing mayhem across many parts of the country last Sunday, my home town of Milton Keynes was badly affected with 3-4 inches of snow mixed with slush and horrendous driving conditions on the less busy roads.

Buses were cancelled. Taxis refused to operate.

My 17 year old daughter, Shreya, had a sleepover with friends the night before so I was leaving her friends’ home. The 3 girls sat beside each other in the back seat, yet insisted on communicating with each other by text.

Less than 50 metres ahead, Car 1 suddenly swerved dangerously on the road. Car 2 behind was taken by surprise, skidded and crashed into the snowbank.

The car in front of me braked immediately. I hit my brakes and skidded perilously, almost smashing into the car in front.

Traffic came to a standstill. Snow continued to pour.

A child about 9 or 10 years old exited Car 1, crying her heart out, absolutely terrified. The drivers in Car 1 and Car 2 were shellshocked.

It was so cold, people stayed in their warm cars instead of helping out.

My wife flung the car door open and rushed over to help the girl who was crying, assuring her it was going to be okay and helping calm her down.

The driver in Car 2 revved his engine and yelled with frustration.

I got out to help. Again, nobody moved from their cars. Some idiot beeped a horn telling everyone to hurry up.

I got everyone from my car to push Car 2. My daughter then walked by a few cars and yelled at them “why aren’t you helping?”

Moments later, a few men reluctantly emerged, urged on by guilt or their partners.

The driver in Car 2 was understandably frustrated. I told him to calm down, stop revving his engine and advised him how to get out of the snowbank. Everyone pushed and worked to help the two cars.

5 minutes later, Cars 1 and 2 were back on the road. I’m incredibly proud of my family. We’re not CEOs yet we all let without a title

This is thought provoking and a wonderful testament to the power of good leadership. Leading calmly and by example. Titles stand for nothing when we truly care about others.

I loved reading this Niraj Kapur. I haven't read that book but the monk who sold is Ferrari is one of my favorite books. You have inspired me to read this other book too. I am not sure why people behave the way they do but sometimes it's fear. It's making me think about my mum and sister. As my dad died at a young age they always encouraged me to help, lead and be compassionate to others nomatter what. I think leadership comes from a place of not worrying about how you will look but being proactive. I was always a shy child but feel by being encouraged to embrace things and finding a path that fitted me I am finally a leader of my own destination. Thanks for sharing and you must be so proud of your daughter.
