Leader Led LinkedIn

Leader Led LinkedIn

Every CEO and sales leader MUST have a daily, strategic and consistent LinkedIn presence.

It's not an option anymore.

It's a competitive necessity. Here's why you probably are not as strategic on LinkedIn and 3 reasons why you should get over your fears and embrace the most important business platform of the 21st century.

The Myths

Most CEO's and sales leaders have reasons (excuses) why they don't believe LinkedIn is a waste of time. Here is what I have learned over the past 2 years of talking a lot with CEO's about LinkedIn.

  1. Wrong Perspective. Duck faces, selfies and self promotion. Often leaders think social media is for self promotion. The look at sport stars, celebrities and influencers and perceive it as all me, me, me, me, me. But, LinkedIn is different. LInkedIn is similar to why your team asks you to join them in important meetings, be in the booth for prospects to meet you or join them at events so their prospects can hear you share information personally and feel special. Your CEO or leadership presence adds credibility and creates more opportunities for your team.
  2. Fear. Behind close doors most leaders say they simply are not sure what to do and they are scared to make mistake. They don't want to do something to embarrass themselves or their company.
  3. Time Suck. Most leaders perceive social media as a time suck. They watch their kids, friends or others just get sucked into social media for hours at a time. As a leader, their self-perception is that they are disciplined, focused and determined. They have not gotten sucked in to social media and wasted their valuable time.
  4. Uncertainty. Similar to fear, they are simply unsure what to do or how to go about it. Leaders have heard stories about someone who made a bad decision, posted something they should not have or was called out in public for something they did or said. The belief is that is is just better to be a bit hidden than take the risk.
  5. Nothing to Contribute. This is a big one. Most leaders simply don't think they have anything important to add to public content. They don't see themselves as a writer or speaker and not sure why they should share content for the world to consume. The reality is, all leaders have a lot to contribute that will directly benefit their company. Their active presence of LinkedIn helps recruit new team members, helps sales get more calls and account managers sell deeper into client accounts. Sharing your experiences, insights, beliefs about your changing industry and most of the things you think about when it comes to your business and industry, well that is social media gold.

Why Leaders Must Overcome These Myths and Embrace LinkedIn Strategically

  1. Competition. When you think of Tesla, what comes to mind? When you think of Amazon, what comes to mind? When you think about Apple, what comes to mind?Ok, I should have said WHO comes to mind. Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos and Steve Jobs, right? Companies grow through leadership brands. That is the power of social media
  2. Example. LinkedIn is the most efficient, cost-effective way for your team members to meet, engage and communicate with your entire industry. Think about LinkedIn as a 24/7/365 networking conference for your entire industry. Your team members not only need to attend, they need to use it properly and consistently to create advantage over your competitors. They will only do it, if they see you doing it.
  3. Reputation. I spoke to a leader the other day who asked me to look up someone on LinkedIn while I was on a Zoom meeting with him. He shared a name and a company name. He then said,

"I have been in this industry for over 30 years. This "kid" is in his 20's and he gets 100's of comments on all of his posts. I never even heard of him before and all my friends and clients seem to follow him. What can I do about this?"

Consider LinkedIn a 24/7/365 conference with all of your best clients, prospects and competitors in attendance. Are you there? Is your team there? Are you having more conversations with clients than your competitors are?

LinkedIn is not an evil, time suck when used strategically. In this business climate, we need every competitive advantage we can find. Are you leveraging it? If all your clients and prospects attend a conference and you don't, is that good for your future success?

How can you lead a 21st century company if you are not leveraging the most influential business platform of the 21st century?
