Leadership Insights 5 - Dealing with Overwhelm
Imagine standing in the middle of a bustling intersection during rush hour.
Now imagine yourself as head teacher, standing in the heart of this intersection where multiple lanes of traffic converge. Each lane represents a different responsibility or task that you must attend to, the traffic symbolising the constant flow of tasks and obligations, coming at you from every angle, beeping and vying for your attention.
As head teacher you try to keep the traffic moving smoothly, but the sheer volume and complexity of tasks keep coming.
You find yourself constantly shifting your focus, trying to manage multiple lanes at the same time, suddenly finding yourself in a juggling act.
As the pressure mounts and the volume and complexity of tasks keep coming, you worry about staying on top of it all. You work longer hours, take work home and wake in the middle of the night worrying.
Sound overwhelming?
If this sounds familiar, trust me, you are not alone!
There is no denying that head teachers and school leaders face significant challenges in their day to day work, but when it all gets too much, it can lead to overwhelm.
Overwhelm can then lead to:
So how do school leaders navigate their way through overwhelm?
Understand the root cause – overwhelm often stems from the sheer volume of responsibilities head teachers and school leaders hold. It’s important therefore to take a step back to identify specifically that’s causing the most stress. Is it the volume of emails and administrative tasks, staff management or something else? Pinpointing the root cause will help you to develop targeted strategies.

Delegate – as head teachers we often feel a sense of responsibility to handle everything ourselves. However, effective delegation is key to not feeling overwhelmed. Identify capable staff members and empower them to take on specific tasks – trust in their abilities and give them the opportunity to grow and excel.
Prioritise self care – You cannot pour from an empty cup! You need therefore to prioritise your self-care to make sure that you have the energy and resilience needed to lead effectively. Establish clear boundaries between work and home life and engage in activities that bring you joy. Remember this is not being selfish or a sign that you’re not committed to your role – it’s essential for sustainable leadership.
Seek professional development – this is essential to keep up with the ever changing educational landscape. Invest in your own growth as a leader not only to enhance your skills but also to provide a fresh perspective and innovative solutions to the challenges you may face.
Have a support network – reach out to other head teachers; network or talk to someone that you can trust. Peer support can be invaluable in sharing experiences, discussing ideas, providing encouragement and learning from those who have faced similar circumstances.
So, imagine yourself standing once again in the middle of that bustling intersection during rush hour described at the beginning of this article. Just as a skilled traffic controller is able to find ways to manage even the busiest of intersections, head teachers and school leaders can learn to navigate overwhelm AND still find moments of respite.
By acknowledging the challenges and seeking the necessary support, it is possible to transform the overwhelming intersection into a well organised ecosystem where everyone can thrive.
